Shift Lead Position Profile The ratio of time spent on leadership duties and paraprofessional responsibilities will vary depending on the hospital situation; the Shift Lead must use good judgment in prioritizing their duties on any given day, ensuring hospital productivity. On average, the ratio is expected to be about 20% leadership duties (primarily when the Practice Manager and/or Chief of Staff are not present) and 80% paraprofessional duties. Shift Lead – Job Summary Primary Role (80% – Paraprofessional Duties):
Support daily veterinary operations by assisting with client services, pet care, and administrative tasks.
Responsibilities include:
+ Welcoming and educating clients. + Preparing pets and records for exams or procedures. + Assisting with surgeries and technical tasks within legal scope. + Managing scheduling, client flow, and hospital cleanliness. + Promoting wellness plans and hospital services. + Handling financial transactions and documentation. Leadership Role (20%):
Support the Practice Manager in leading the team and ensuring efficient hospital operations.

+ Guide and mentor staff to deliver high-quality care. + Help manage daily staffing and workflow. + Ensure clear communication among team members and with clients. + Support training, problem-solving, and conflict resolution. + Maintain hospital standards and address equipment or supply issues. Necessary Skills and Expectations:
+ Assisting veterinarians during surgical procedures + Performing venipunctures (cephalic, saphenous, jugular) + IV catheter placement + Preparing surgical instruments and equipment + Monitoring anesthesia and vital signs during surgery + Performing dental scaling + Sterilizing surgical instruments and maintaining a sterile surgical environment + Providing post-operative care to animals + Handling and disposing of surgical waste properly + Communicating effectively with veterinary team members and pet owners + Following proper safety protocols and procedures during surgeries
Work Environment:
+ Physically active role with exposure to pets, medical equipment, and occasional hazards. + Requires flexibility to work weekends, evenings, and overtime as needed.
Qualifications:
+ Associate degree or vet tech certification preferred. + Minimum 2 years’ experience in veterinary or service industry; 6 months at Banfield preferred. + Supervisory experience is a plus. + You must be 18 years or older. + You must be available to work weekend and evening shifts.
