Position Summary:

Reporting to the Unit Supervisor, the Food Service Associate plays a vital role in food preparation and service for our student, faculty and staff lunch program, and for other catered and special events. This position’s main focus will be the preparation of individual ingredients and recipes for our cold food areas, such as salad bars.

Specific Duties Include:

Working with a small team, follow daily assignments set by the Unit Supervisor Prepare cold food items such as salads, vegetables, sandwiches, sliced deli meats and cheeses, condiments and other items. Be able to follow recipes and to scale them to serving quantities needed Take and record food temperatures and carry out any corrective actions required Operate and clean a variety of commercial kitchen equipment, including a meat slicer, a food processor, and an oven Set up lunch service lines and dining areas, including stocking them with food and supplies such as silverware, napkins, towels and cleaning supplies Assist with student lunch service, which includes serving on the food serving lines, assisting students and staff with requests, and backing up food supplies Break down and clean food serving areas and the dining room spaces, including cleaning serving lines and salad bars, sanitizing work surfaces, etc. Make efficient usage of food to help minimize food wastage Ensure the correct cooling, dating and storage of left-over food Launder the aprons and towels used in the department Comply with all state regulatory and ServSafe food safety regulations: help maintain a clean and sanitary department Rotate duties with other staff members to learn additional functions and be able to provide back up at any cafeteria on campus in staff absences Must be willing to work occasional evening and weekend special events, assist in other departments as needed, and participate in staff meetings or training sessions All other duties as assigned

Required Skills:

Must enjoy making delicious foods and have experience in basic commercial kitchen techniques, such as fast knife skills, and a knowledge of standard food weights and volume measurements A service-oriented, motivated individual with an ability to communicate effectively and constructively A willingness to help others, and to contribute new ideas Basic experience and knowledge of commercial kitchen cleaning methods and cleaning supplies Good reading skills and basic math ability to enable recipe scaling Ability to stand for long periods of time. Required to lift up to 40 pounds in weight. Good dexterity skills are required for food production and serving activities

Minimum Job Qualifications:

A high school graduate, with at least 1 year of experience in a large food service operation ServSafe certification would be beneficial The Food Service Associate (Cold Foods Focus), Dining Services is a non-exempt,12-month position.
