Museum Educator, Part time Connecticut Museum of Culture and History Hartford, CT 06105
- Hybrid work Museum Educators are responsible for presenting dynamic, interactive, inquiry-based programs, tours, and other educational activities to schools, community, adult, and youth groups at the Connecticut Museum of Culture and History (formerly known as Connecticut Historical Society) and at designated off-site venues.
Museum Educators travel to all corners of the state delivering programs and presentations to children and adults of all ages. Museum Educators work closely with other members of the Education Department to develop content for programs. Museum Educators are responsible for assisting in the overall work of the Education Department and this position reports to the School Programs Manager.
Schedule:
Part-time, 20-25 hours per week, and occasional evenings and weekends with notice.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Teaching museum and classroom outreach programs for students in pre-K through grade 12 around a variety of themes related to school social studies curricula. These programs include leading age-appropriate hands-on activities and primary source analysis.
- Traveling approximately twice per week to schools throughout Connecticut.
(Candidates MUST have a reliable method of transportation for getting to outreach locations.) Commuting time to non-Connecticut Museum locations is paid, and mileage is reimbursed at the federal reimbursement rate, which as of June 1, 2025 is $0.70/mile, but is subject to change. The teaching schedule is coordinated in advance. Traveling across the state to deliver engaging PowerPoint presentations to adult audiences at libraries, senior centers, assisted living facilities, museums, and social clubs. Presentations are on a wide range of historical topics highlighting the Museum’s extensive collection. Commuting time and mileage is paid as outlined above.
- Assisting in set-up and clean-up for educational activities and the preparation of teaching materials, including preparing supplies in advance.
- Leading interactive and engaging tours of the museum’s exhibitions to museum visitors of all ages and abilities.
- Active participation in team discussions and educator training.
- Performing other duties as assigned by the School Programs Manager.
Qualifications:
- Excellent interpretive, public speaking, and communication skills with an ability to adapt lessons and tours to different ages, learning styles, and abilities.
- Willingness, flexibility, comfort, and confidence to teach school programs and lead hands-on activities with children.
- Experience working with children and/or adults in a museum, school, or informal educational setting.
- Ability to think creatively and respond flexibly to unexpected situations
- Comfort in learning and presenting on various topics related to Connecticut history and culture
- Dedication to public service and a commitment to reaching diverse audiences.
- Reliability and personal organization to ensure that all commitments are met.
- A collaborative team member.
- Strong interpersonal skills and a commitment to providing exceptional customer service to all participants and visitors.
- Access to reliable transportation for mileage-reimbursed travel to outreach programs.
- B.
A. in history, education, art history or fine arts, or a related field preferred.
