Primary Purpose of Position:

Position performs a wide range of duties in areas of interpretation of 27-acre site which includes a representative 16th Century sailing ship, land-based encampment, American Indian Town, and a museum interpreting 400 years of Outer Banks History plus supporting exhibits and activities. Position demonstrates living history/skills and artifacts management. Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to: Learning and explaining the history of the site, its historical period, and the areas and demonstrating historic skills. Working tours and tailoring to the needs of the group in terms of age or education level, time allotted or areas of special interest. Dressing in period costume and developing a full knowledge of the character they are portraying.

Position/Physical Requirements:

Must be available to work the schedule of Tuesday – Saturday, 8:45am – 5:15pm, with some holidays. Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and /or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects with or without reasonable accommodation. Must be able to perform job duties in outside environmental conditions and wear costumes with or without reasonable accommodation. Must be able to stand on your feet for long periods of time with or without reasonable accommodation. Must be able to establish and maintain effective work relationships.

Qualified candidates must have or be able to: Demonstrated experience conducting historic, museum, or park tours and adapting them to age, interest level, special interest, or time constraints. Basic knowledge of providing fun, interactive, and/or hands-on educational interpretative programs. Basic knowledge of State, national, and/or regional history. Basic knowledge writing cohesive material based on primary or secondary resource documentation. Basic knowledge of archival practices and managing artifacts and/or props to ensure they are present and in good condition in buildings and grounds. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements Some state job postings say you can qualify by an “equivalent combination of education and experience.” If that language appears below, then you may qualify through EITHER years of education OR years of directly related experience, OR a combination of both. Roanoke Island Festival Park is a 27-acre site. First opening in 1983 with the ” Elizabeth II “, a 16th century replica sailing vessel, and a visitor’s center. In 1998, an expansion project was completed adding an 8,500 sq. ft. Adventure Museum; a 240-seat film/small performance indoor theatre; a 50-seat auditorium; Ticket Sales; a 3,000-sq. ft. meeting room; an outdoor performance pavilion with lawn seating for 3,500; a museum store; administrative offices; maintenance facilities; waterside boardwalks; and a public Kayak Launch.
