Primary Purpose of Position:

The Historical Interpreter II position involves performing a range of standardized and administrative tasks in the area of interpretation, visitor services, special event coordination, volunteer management, exhibit writing and artifact evaluation, living history demonstrations and management, serve as education coordinator, and some site support duties which may include clerical duties or operating a sales desk. This position trains and supervises living history volunteers (children and adults), serving as the lead coordinator for the Youth & Junior Interpreter programs. This position also conducts the bulk of the site’s historical research. Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to: Recruit, train, and oversee Youth, Junior, and Adult living history volunteers, hosting workshops and living history days with volunteers. Perform costumed interpretation and demonstration of mid-19th Century domestic and agricultural skills, creating garden and field crop plans for guidance. Manage reservations, coordination, and payment with all school groups for on-site specialty programming, and lead school programs on site. Conduct standard visitor services and interpretive duties with daily guided tours. Assist with special event coordination Identify, analyze, and interpret archival sources relating to Duke Homestead, the Duke family’s businesses including tobacco and its impact on history and health, and the Duke family’s philanthropic pursuits, incorporating research into tours and exhibits, helping determine exhibit themes and writing text-based research. Assist with administrative functions, such as helping manage daily revenue, and recording daily visitation statistics, and operating the sales desk.

Position/Physical Requirements:

Must be available to work the schedule of Tuesday – Saturday, 8:30am – 5:00pm
Must be able to work extended periods outside during hot, cold, and inclement weather with or without reasonable accommodation.
Must be able to work in an environment with regular exposure to allergens like dust, woodsmoke, pollen, and wool with or without reasonable accommodation.
Must have the physical ability to perform strenuous outdoor activities with or without reasonable accommodation.

Qualified candidates must have or be able to: Working knowledge of US History Demonstrated experience working with youth Demonstrated experience giving and adapting historic tours to age, interest level, special interests, or time constraints.

Management Prefers:

Experience with costumed interpretation, living history skills, domestic, trades, and/or agricultural experience Experience with creating and/or implementing educational programming Experience with planning events Working knowledge gained through profession and/or coursework to incorporate primary & secondary source research and analysis to write cohesive material based on documentation. Duke Homestead State Historic Site and Tobacco Museum is one of 28 State Historic Sites run by the Division of Historic Sites, which is part of the NC Department of Natural & Cultural Resources. Duke Homestead State Historic Site and Tobacco Museum encompasses the historic home, farm, and factory buildings of Washington Duke and his family as they lived on the property from 1852-1874. The site interprets the early farming life of the Duke family and the beginnings of their tobacco manufacturing business on the property after the Civil War. It further interprets the Duke family’s founding of the world’s largest tobacco company and the tobacco agricultural and manufacturing practices which upheld it. The Tobacco Museum explores North Carolina’s tobacco history, and is one of the largest exhibit galleries in the Division of Historic Sites.
