As a Lead Educator, you will be in a crucial role for the growth and sustainability of our education program. We are looking for someone who is looking for an opportunity to commit their time and skills to support youth in learning safe bike riding and walking skills, and adults in using our bus system. Bike Durham is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization whose mission is to use events, advocacy and education, to empower all people to walk, bike and ride transit more often. Our vision is a Durham where everyone has access to safe, affordable and sustainable transportation regardless of who they are or where they live. Bike Durham currently has six full-time and four part-time staff, and this position and our work culture requires close collaboration among all on the team. This position will report to the Education Program Manager. This is not an entry-level position; we strongly prefer applicants with Spanish language skills. Description of Roles and Responsibilities Duties include: Maintain and establish new relationships with teachers, school administrators, and partners; Assist in scheduling Bike Riding and Walking Safety Classes and be in charge of updates and modifications to the schedule; Supervise education teams at schools, setting-up and breaking-down obstacle courses with cones and signs; checking equipment and bikes and make sure they’re ready to ride (e.g., put air in tires, adjust seat level, etc.); Fit participants with properly sized helmet and bicycle and perform helmet and bike checks for students’ personal equipment; Organize events at six Durham Public Schools (DPS) throughout the year to encourage participation by parents and community members; run logistics; manage volunteers and staff; Become familiar with procedures and protocols for safety and working with minors at each school, partner organization, or community center; Schedule, organize, and lead transit training activities; Conduct site and safety management for dynamic activities; Distribute and collect liability waivers. Requirements Be able to lead a team by example and through respectful communication Be culturally aware and respectful of different ways participants dress, style their hair, and communicate Be respectful of all participants’ body types and sizes Enjoy working with people of all ages in a calm, non-controlling manner Interest in bicycling and public transit as transportation Be punctual Submit to a criminal background check Perform light to moderate lifting Conversational Spanish language skills are preferred, but not required Access to a personal vehicle and driver license preferred for logistics. Worksite Location(s)/Schedule Our bicycle safety skills courses are taught at schools and community organizations, or at community events in Durham. Transit training classes include an on-site component and an on-vehicle trip. Planning time can be completed in a flexible hybrid environment. Bike Durham has co-working space at ReCity in downtown Durham. Lead educators will work 40 hours per week. Typically, the courses are taught on weekdays during the school hours between 7am and 4pm. Occasionally, we participate in weekend events. In-school shift duration is typically 2-3 hours per event. Job Rewards Experience fun working with a great team.
