The plantation now serves as an interpretive site for the system of slavery and rice cultivation in the region from the colonial period through the end of the Civil War. The property also tells the story of the freed people who made their homes in the Santee Delta region for generations after emancipation.

Job Purpose and Duties:

Under general supervision, assists with the overall operation and educational program of Hampton Plantation State Historic Site. Performs diversified duties as governed by general instruction, policies and standard operating procedures of the Department. Assumes the responsibilities of the Park Manager in the absence of higher level employees. 1) Plans, promotes and conducts tours, programs, workshops and activities for the park visitor through personal contact, oral and written communications. 2) Conducts cultural, natural, and historical research in areas relative to Hampton Plantation to enhance its interpretation and management of its resources. Implement new exhibits, maintain current waysides and provide additional learning opportunities for park visitors. 3) Assists with other park administrative, operational, retail functions and other duties as directed. 4) Practice and promote teamwork within the State Park Service, throughout the agency and with external agency stakeholders. Represents office as an active member on Park Service teams assigned throughout the year. 5) Work to accomplish the mission of the Park Service through the core values of Stewardship and Service. Effectively deliver quality customer service and address visitor concerns in a timely manner. Work to ensure that visitors leave with a positive experience and a desire to return. 6) Plans, directs and conducts maintenance on historical features to include, landscapes, facilities and equipment ensuring that they are maintained to the standards set forth by the Park Service. 7) Prepares required administrative reports and maintains records related to visitation, cataloging and inventory of specimens, special programs etc. 8) Employee will be required to live in designated housing to provide security, safety and emergency response. Minimum and Additional Requirements Masters Degree in public history, American history, museum studies, historic preservation or a related field or Bachelors Degree in same studies and two years experience at historic sites or museums, or equivalent combination of education and training.

Additional Requirements:

1) Position requires medium to heavy lifting, bending, walking, and standing on uneven terrain, crawling and working at heights. Exposure to weather conditions, cleaning agents and other material used in maintaining park facilities and grounds. Works with office equipment such as computers, calculators, etc. Position requires flexible work schedule, to include weekends and holidays. 2) Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Must have proven ability to work well with range of people in a collaborative atmosphere. Must possess basic knowledge of park operations, maintenance and administrative functions. 3) Must possess a valid S.C. driver’s license. Preferred Qualifications Familiarity with historic preservation, museum practices and curatorial experience preferred.

Additional Comments Actual Job Location:
