, Maine Portland, ME, USA | Administrative | Full Time The Patient Accounts Benefit Specialist contributes to the mission of Spurwink by ensuring that all clients of Spurwink have accurate and complete information regarding their insurance coverage in our records to ensure the appropriate billing of our services on their behalf. A successful candidate will have knowledge of insurance terminology, types of policies, and insurance industry rules and standards. Ability to prioritize multiple tasks effectively is a must, as are excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills (most requests are time-sensitive). Candidate must possess a willingness to work in a team-oriented environment, be attentive to detail and possess patience when dealing with clients, family members, insurance providers and clinical/billing staff.
DUTIES:
Contact all payor types to gather health benefit information for new/scheduled clients within Agency determined timeframe. Provide direct support to Programs regarding authorization and utilization activities. Perform other insurance verifications and patient accounts duties: Submit and process

Eligibility with MaineCare on a weekly basis to confirm current eligibility for existing MaineCare clients. Generate and review denial reports for coverage reason codes and resolve. Assist all department staff with questions and follow up on accounts past due or denied for payment. Perform verification requests for all coverage terminations. Maintain tracking tools, client files, billing documents, and financial notes to ensure a proper trail for research and auditing purposes. Respond to phone calls from Program Directors, clinicians, payers, clients, etc. within 24 hours. Prepare reports for various department leadership, program directors, etc. from the various databases/spreadsheets.
QUALIFICATIONS
High School diploma or equivalent required. Two or more years of experience with Medicare, MaineCare, and other third-party payers, specifically with authorizations, insurance verifications and medical billing procedures. Experience with personal computer spreadsheets and database packages, including Excel, and Microsoft Word, and navigating insurance websites is also required.
