Description of Work The Retirement Systems Division is hiring Disability Benefits Analysts in the Disability Processing section. Applicants with claims processing experience –such as disability insurance, unemployment, child support payments, and bank loans — are highly desired and encouraged to apply! This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits, including health insurance, paid vacation, paid sick time, paid holidays, as well as retirement. About Us
The Retirement Systems Division administers the statutory retirement and fringe benefit plans as authorized by the General Assembly of North Carolina. These include the following six major retirement plans: Teachers’ and State Employees’ Retirement System, the Legislative Retirement System, the Local Governmental Employees’ Retirement System, the Consolidated Judicial Retirement System, the Optional Retirement Program, and Firemen’s and Rescue Workers’ Pension Fund. The Disability Benefits Analysts is located in the Benefits Processing Section (Disability/Refunds) of the Retirement Division. This position is responsible for processing claims and payment of claims within the disability benefits programs for the State’s public pension plans. These programs include short-term disability, extended short-term disability, preliminary long term disability, extended short-term disability, and long-term disability. Duties & Responsibilities Review disability applications for accuracy and completeness. Gather and analyze information from forms and medical documents (emphasis on accurate dates, dollar amounts, and other mathematical data).
Follow established electronic workflows and processes to manage the claims process Eligibility Determination. Learn and apply knowledge of the Retirement System’s disability programs and interpret disability laws to ensure members qualify for disability prior to a medical determination. Communicate with employers to address discrepancies related to payroll, certified disability dates, and leave exhaustion. Ensure proper benefits coordination when the applicant is receiving other benefits (e.g., Workers’ Compensation, Veteran’s benefits, Social Security) Benefit Calculation & Processing.
Daily use of Microsoft Excel to verify disability calculations are accurate and to calculate monthly benefits, offsets, overpayments, and employee refunds.
Identify and report overpayments and work closely with internal staff to find appropriate resolutions. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies Qualified applicants must possess, and application must clearly reflect work experience that demonstrates the following: Experience reviewing and processing high volumes of claims or applications, such as disability claims, bank/mortgage loans, child support payments/garnishments, insurance claims. Experience in Microsoft Excel to perform mathematical tasks such as verifying benefit calculations and payment amounts.
Experience performing research, data collection and analysis of information, and report writing. Management Preferences Experience processing disability benefits.
