The inclusion specialist/special education coordinator is a teacher contract, stipend position that will support the vision of the student service department in increasing the fidelity of specially designed instruction, increasing time in Core instruction to support Core and more, and supporting special education indicator effectiveness. A primary responsibility will be leading IEP teams meetings in the application of special education law and assisting teams in navigating unique situations. The individual will be skilled at problem solving to implement high quality IEPs. The position will support special education meetings as an LEA approximately two days per week. The remainder of the specialist/coordinator time will be spent coaching special education instructional strategies, supporting targeted professional development implementation, and providing support in implementing services. Supporting instruction may include providing direct special education services in opportunities for generalization and inclusion, and providing modeling, coaching, and partnering for increased effectiveness of specially designed instruction. The role will serve to strengthen fidelity of special education processes and procedures as outlined in IDEA and increase the effectiveness of specially designed instructional models implemented in Amherst. The specialist/coordinator would be expected to align and support the following priorities for the

Amherst School District:
  • A focus on targeted professional development for special educators in literacy, mathematics, and high-leverage service delivery models
  • Horizontal alignment for increase of inclusion and generalization of skills
  • Utilize data to respond to student needs in a timely and high impact mannerThe position will also assist the district in aligning to the expectations outlined in the NHDOE Special Education Program Approval and General Supervision (PAGS) process by examining practices to inform areas for strengthening.

These areas may include identified student proficiency and growth levels, special education environments, parent partnerships, and special education processes and procedures, and are aligned to the SAUs Framework for Success. Required for the position

  • Endorsement as Special Educator
  • Minimum of 3-6 years of experience as a special educator
  • Master’s in Special Education or related field
  • Skilled at collaborating with multidisciplinary teams
  • Exceptional understanding of special education law and application to processes and procedures Preferred
  • Participation in teacher leadership roles
  • Additional specialized literacy training
  • Experience implementing various service delivery models, such as small group, individual, inclusion, co teaching, etc.
  • Experience in NHSEIS
  • Experience as an LEA in special education meetings
