Manages the Center’s historical research agenda, developing exhibits, presentations, and publications. Develop strategic priorities for education and outreach. Manage in-house asset archive. Collaborate with community and university partners on various projects. Lead a team of education and research staff. Job Related Minimum Required Education and Experience Requires a bachelor’s degree in a job related field and 3 or more years of job related experience, which may be substituted by an equivalent combination of job related certification, training, education, and/or experience. Required Certification, Licensure/Other Credentials Preferred Qualifications PhD in History, Public History, or related field Previous experience in museums, archives, historic preservation, archival research, and exhibits (digital and/or physical) Extensive Knowledge of African American History, including the civil rights movement Ability to balance multiple projects and self-manage deadlines Experience working with public history collaborative projects, historical writing, and exhibits Ability to travel for research and fieldwork as needed; estimated 4-5 days per month Knowledge/Skills/Abilities General knowledge of project management principles and methodologies. Ability to effectively plan and organize work activities and prioritize task completion according to schedules and goals. Ability to exercise judgment and discretion. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Ability to interpret and apply laws, regulations, policies and procedures. Ability to communicate effectively.

Specific Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Knowledge of the African American civil rights movement, particularly the role of South Carolina, is encouraged Knowledge of and experience with History and Public History best practices, including exhibit design, digital exhibits, oral history practices, and SC archival repositories Excellent written skills and strong verbal communication skills Strong organizational skills and excellent attention to detail Demonstrated excellence in archival research, exhibit planning, and time management skills. Ability to collaborate and achieve results with supervision, including the ability to interact professionally with key internal and external stakeholders as needed Comprehensive knowledge of African American and/or US Civil Rights history demonstrated by authorship of a seminar paper, thesis, published exhibit, or portfolio on a topic of African American or US civil rights history Giving presentations to various audiences on historical topics and themes Responding to general inquiries on African American and Civil Rights history from colleagues and/or the general public Job Duties Job Duty Manage the Center’s historical research agenda, including working with other staff members to develop exhibits and publications on behalf of the Center. Provide historical research, curation, and interpretation for exhibits alongside an Exhibits Manager or other staff members. Essential Function Yes Percentage of Time 30 Job Duty Supervise the Public Historian and collaborate with the CRC researchers and writers on long-term research projects and publications for the center. Essential Function Yes Percentage of Time 15 Job Duty Establish priorities for education and outreach in conjunction with the Education Coordinator, including developing long-term strategy and annual goals for programming and engagement. Supervise the Education Coordinator and collaborate to develop programming and materials. Develop a roster of programs and other offerings for in-school visits and field trips that can be marketed to teachers and other school-based educators. Create an educational calendar, including developing scheduled outreach to educators at all levels and recurring educational programs for non-school-based learning. Evaluate existing and new center resources for historical accuracy and interpretive clarity. Work with the Education Coordinator to update and improve resources on an ongoing basis, including accessible lesson plans for educators. Essential Function Yes Percentage of Time 20 Job Duty Develop and manage in-house asset archive to facilitate the use of materials for programs and pop-up exhibits. Train and work with other staff members to develop pop-up exhibits using existing materials and additional research as needed. Essential Function Yes Percentage of Time 10 Job Duty Manage Civil Rights History State of the Field conference with Administrative Coordinators, Directors, Programs Manager, and Education Coordinator. Essential Function Yes Percentage of Time 10 Job Duty Collaborate with university partners (faculty, graduate students, archivists, other centers) to facilitate the use of civil rights collections and the Center’s resources to further the teaching, research, and interpretation connected to civil rights history. Work with community partners (public history organizations, researchers, community members) to make the resources of the Center available for research and programming.
