Human Resources Position Summary The Human Resource (HR) Generalist reports to the AVP, HR and Employee Relations. The HR Generalist provides advanced technical and administrative HR support and expertise on a broad range of HR management issues working closely with other members of the HR team supporting the overall mission of the University. The HR Generalist also serve as the Leave of Absence Specialist and will oversee and administer leave requests and accommodations requiring specialized attention, particularly those arising under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), state and local leave laws, workers’ compensation, and short-term or long-term disability plans.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND TASKS
Provides support for the HRBP using their expertise on a broad and comprehensive range of human resources activities including recruitment, compensation, benefits administration, talent acquisition, employee relations, and other HR functional areas;
Maintains knowledge of the Morehouse School of Medicine’s policies, processes, and resources; provides guidance to employees regarding adherence to policies and procedures; identifies innovative solutions and options to address human resources issues; may assists in the development, implementation, and/or delivery of training on H.R. policies, procedures, and practices;
Reviews and verifies incoming and outgoing documentation for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with established policies and procedures; Monitors and responds to employee requests and questions; Able to refer inquiries to the appropriate HR expert for follow-up;
Handles the FMLA leave administration process from the employees’ initial notice of the need for leave to the return to work. This includes gathering and completing all required paperwork, determining leave eligibility, designating leave as FMLA-qualifying, requesting medical certification as needed, and accounting for intermittent and reduced schedule leave use.
Maintains reasonable communication with employees on leave to facilitate smooth and timely return to work, relays communication between employees and their managers during leave within reason.
Facilitates other leave requests, which may include accommodation requests under the ADA. Maintains complete and accurate records of leave and accommodation requests in accordance with specified legal requirements and documentation of best practices.
Assists with projects to improve the quality of HR services provided; this includes planning, developing, and modifying of human resources programs to better serve the needs of the Institution.
Able maintain organization of projects and deliverables while juggling multiple projects and managing numerous deadlines in an environment where business needs may change, and priorities may require constant reshuffling;
Assists the HRBP team in managing projects and expectations; this includes initial unemployment responses to the Department of Labor and supports the HRBP with gathering data and written correspondences as needed for hearings, investigations, and other related HRBP engagement with employees;
Approximately 60% of the Generalist’s time will be spend on HR transactional support activities and 40% will center on leave management duties.

Ability to protect confidential information and communicate with impeccable discretion in all matters related to employees and internal processes.
Capable of establishing priorities and organizing resources.
Knowledge of human resources principles, practices, and processes.
Ability to make administrative and procedural decisions when necessary.
Knowledge of current federal and state employment law and regulations.
Ability to prepare and present training programs and materials.
Ability to analyze complex information and to define and solve problems.
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, Access, PowerPoint and SharePoint).

Bachelor’s Degree
Two (2) years’ experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities listed or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Excellent understanding of Microsoft products (Excel, Word & PowerPoint).
Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge and experience with H.R. Systems; previous experience using Work Day, a plus.
Experience working in a Human Resources Department in a higher education environment;
SHRM-CP or
HRCI-PHR
certification preferred.
