Position Overview The Director of Finance & Human Resources (DOF) is a key member of the senior leadership team, reporting to the CEO. This full-time exempt role is responsible for managing the financial health, human resources, and selected administrative functions of CFBG. The DOF fosters a collaborative, inclusive culture and contributes to the organization’s strategic growth and sustainability. This role requires a hands-on leader with a proactive, detail-oriented approach, strong financial acumen, and the ability to cultivate relationships across departments and with external stakeholders.
Work schedule:
weekdays 8:30-5:00. Some special events will require evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed. Duties and Responsibilities The ideal candidate is a self-motivated leader who will oversee and communicate CFBG’s financial operations with a focus on both daily management and long-term planning.
Key responsibilities include:
Serving as the organization’s financial expert, providing strategic insights and proactive solutions to enhance program delivery and guest experience. Staying current on industry standards and best practices in nonprofit financial management and human resources. Leading and developing internal systems and staff in the areas of finance, business planning, budgeting, human resources, record keeping, administration, and IT. Promoting a respectful, ethical, and positive work environment that supports professional growth and organizational stewardship. Demonstrating strong organizational skills, sound financial reasoning, attention to detail, and creativity in identifying revenue opportunities. Financial Leadership Lead financial operations and planning in alignment with CFBG’s mission and strategic goals. Lead budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, and analysis processes for a $2.4M annual budget. Collaborate with department heads to ensure sound financial practices and operational realities. Serve as staff liaison to the Finance Committee and support the CEO and BOD with financial information. Manage investments, reserves, donor-restricted funds, and campaign pledges in accordance with donor intent. Support capital campaign accounting and reporting needs. Accounting & Compliance Ensure compliance with financial laws, regulations, and internal controls. Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements. Maintain and update financial policies and procedures. Oversee accounts payable/receivable, including retail and facility rental income. Manage records for audits, W-9s, and worker’s compensation. Coordinate annual insurance renewals and ensure appropriate coverage is in place. Communicate financial information clearly to a variety of stakeholders. Human Resources Oversee HR functions including recruitment, onboarding, performance management and employee relations for 30 staff members and contract workers. Administer compensation, payroll, and benefits programs; liaise with benefit providers during enrollment and claims resolution, including 1099s for contractors. Administer benefits including medical, dental, vision, FSA, and HRA plans. Maintain compliance with federal and state employment laws and Garden HR policies. Administration, Facilities, and IT Oversight Supervises Finance Assistant and Operations Manager, ensuring effective execution of financial and operation functions. vendor and contractor relationships. Oversee liability coverages, risk management, crisis response planning, business licenses and vendor contracts. Coordinate annual insurance renewals, audits and financial filings. Support IT, infrastructure and facility system oversight in collaboration with operations and external vendors. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field;
MBA, CPA, CFA
is a plus. Minimum of 5 years of progressive financial and administrative leadership experience, ideally in a nonprofit or public garden or cultural institution setting. Proven success in financial management, strategic planning, and team leadership. Strong knowledge of nonprofit financial regulations and best practices. Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills. Ability to lift 30lbs and navigate a garden/outdoor environment.
