City Expectations:
Certain essential city services are required to be maintained in any civil emergency. Depending upon the type of emergency, any and all employees may be activated as essential employees in the event of an emergency.
Duties & Responsibilities Specific Duties and Responsibilities Essential Functions:
1. Develops, monitors and implements training goals and objectives, and works through the chain of command, to establish a training program in compliance with departmental training policies, regulations, and risk management safety practices. 2. Plans, directs, implements, and ensures the timely completion of employee training programs to include, at a minimum, high liability areas (firearms, defensive tactics, vehicle operations, etc.), active shooter response, legal updates, Post Academy Training (PAT) and all other statutorily required training (local, state or federal mandates), along with the Florida Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission (CJSTC) and the Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation (CFA) or as otherwise deemed necessary by the Chief of Police. 3. Plans, prioritizes, assigns, supervises, reviews, and/or coordinates work of assigned departmental administrative support staff; ensures accuracy/efficiency of work performed; and counsels employees on job performance. 4. Oversees the training for newly recruited Police Officer Sponsorships by monitoring their performance during and post-police academy. 5. Oversees the Field Training program for new officers and the training programs for newly assigned supervisors. 6. Monitors police officers who are assigned training responsibilities; and reports to the Police Chief on instructional proficiency. 7. Ensures the department has adequate numbers of qualified instructors to accomplish training needs and makes recommendations as needed. 8. Responsible for staying current with CJSTC, local, state, federal, and CFA training requirements. 9. Compiles and maintains training records for certification and re-certification of personnel. 10. Oversees all operations at the Venice Police training facility. 11. Safely drives and operates city vehicles as required.
Responsibilities:
Responsible for the coordination, accuracy, and timeliness of all assigned functions and operations. Responsible in work to the Department Director or designated supervisor. Minimum Qualifications Minimum Education and Training High school graduate or equivalent. Five (5) years of sworn law enforcement and three (3) years teaching or training experience required (may run consecutively or concurrently). Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) certification as a high liability instructor or have the ability to obtain within six (6) months of date of hire. Possess a valid Florida Driver’s license, free of any serious violations.
Minimum Qualifications and Standards Required Skill Requirements:
Knowledge of curriculum development; training principles, practices, and techniques; and methods, materials, and equipment used in making training presentations. Ability to utilize approved technology to develop virtual/online training courses. Must be able to coordinate the functions of a multi-faceted operation effectively handling multiple priorities and the pressure of deadlines. Must have exceptional oral communication skills in order to lead classroom-based instruction. Ability to work independently or direct supervision and capable of sustaining regular and predictable attendance. Must be able maintain effective working relationships with elected officials, vendors, supervisors, co-workers and the general public. Requires a working knowledge of the current version of Microsoft Office Professional software suite including proficiency with Word, Excel and Power Point. Must have a basic understanding of the current version of the Microsoft Windows operating system. Working knowledge of the Microsoft Exchange e-mail application or equivalent and Internet Explorer is also highly recommended. Ability to learn specific computer applications used in the Department.
Physical Requirements:
Work is essentially sedentary with occasional walking, standing, bending, and carrying items under 25 pounds such as books, papers, etc. Requires finger and wrist dexterity and hand/eye coordination to perform keyboard functions. Ability to see; hear well, with or without aids; and speak clearly and distinctly. Reasonable accommodation will be considered for individuals with physical disabilities.
Supplemental Information Working Conditions:
Work is primarily performed in an office environment and at various off-site locations when managing certain types of training (i.e. firearms, vehicle operations, defensive tactics, etc.). The noise level in the environment is moderate (some exposure to loud noise at the gun range). Occasional night and/or weekend training required.
