10-Month Guidance Counselor – Middle/High School

QUALIFICATIONS
Master’s degree from an accredited educational institution. Certified by the State of Alabama in the appropriate area. Must meet the No Child Left Behind Act regulations/requirements. Demonstrated proficiency in oral and written communication skills. Effective interpersonal skills, with an emphasis on communication and collaboration with a wide variety of people and groups, for the purpose of maximizing student achievement. Ability to develop and implement curriculum and programming specific to the needs of the students at the designated grade level(s) and in the designated content area(s)/subject(s). Physical strength, mobility, dexterity, stamina, and acuity to perform job responsibilities. Ability to be punctual and in regular attendance. Must meet background clearance requirements as specified by Alabama Statutes and State Board of Education regulations. Such alternative qualifications to those listed as the Board may require.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Demonstrates support for the school system and its vision, goals and priorities. 2. Coordinates all aspects of the total guidance and counseling program through services to individual students, groups of students, school staff and community. 3. Conducts counseling and guidance learning activities in the classroom in collaboration with the teaching staff for each assigned grade level during the school year. 4. Consults with and is a resource to teachers to facilitate the infusion of counseling content into the regular education curriculum. 5. Collaborates with middle and/or high school personnel to assist students in making a smooth transition to high school. 6. Provides orientation activities for incoming students and their parents. 7. Utilizes technology to plan and provide instruction and facilitate student learning. 8. Models appropriate and innovative use of technology for students and staff. 9. Informs students and parents of test results and their implications for educational and career planning. 10. Interprets group or individual test results to faculty and administration for use in enhancing instruction. 11. Coordinates, plans, and participates in the implementation of the school system assessment program in conjunction with the principal. 12. Conducts structured, goal-oriented counseling sessions to meet the identified needs of individuals and groups of students. 13. Plans and conducts staff development programs and activities. 14. Facilitates conferences with teachers and/or parents and/or students. 15. Plans and conducts parent education programs. 16. Assists families with school-related problems and issues. 17. Consults with and refers students with problems (and their parents) to community based resources including, but not limited to, psychologists, psychiatrists, physicians, service agencies, etc. 18. Cooperates and collaborates with other professionals in enhancing the education of students. 19. Communicates with administrators, teachers, students, parents, and the community regarding the counseling and guidance program and its role in the educational program. 20. Reviews the counseling and guidance program annually with the counseling and guidance department staff and counseling and guidance program advisory committee. 21. Identifies students needs periodically and uses the results for program planning. 22. Establishes a planning calendar for counseling and guidance program activities. 23. Evaluates the counseling and guidance program. 24. Attends staff development programs, workshops, and conferences to improve professional performance and knowledge. 25. Serves on school and/or system committees, advisory boards, and/or task forces as needed. 26. Participates in state-approved evaluation program as required. 27. Actively supervises students during assigned duty before, during and/or after school as directed. 28. Supervises and/or assists with extracurricular and co-curricular activities and assigned. 29. Maintains appropriate confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters. 30. Demonstrates initiative in identifying potential problems and/or opportunities for improvement in areas of responsibility. 31. Engages in professional growth and demonstrates professional ethics and effective leadership. 32. Reports potential problems, unusual events, or work irregularities to appropriate administrative or supervisory personnel. 33. Responds to inquiries, requests, constructive feedback, concerns and/or complaints in a timely and positive manner. 34. Maintains and submits reports, records, and correspondence in a timely and accurate manner. 35. Properly uses and cares for equipment and material resources of the school system and effectively supervises and monitors others in the care, maintenance, and use of equipment and materials. 36. Uses effective collaboration skills to work as a productive team member. 37. Serves on school system committees, tasks forces, and representative groups as required. 38. Adheres to school system rules, administrative procedures, local Board policies, and state, federal, and local regulations. 39. Reports absences and takes leave in accordance with Board policies and procedures. 40. Performs any other job-related duties as assigned by the Principal.

To provide high quality comprehensive counseling and guidance programs for elementary school student, and to provide consultative and collaborative services to teachers, parents, administrators and staff to support academic achievement and school success for secondary school students.
