JOB GOAL

: To help students overcome obstacles to learning and to guide them in making academic choices that will enable them to become contributing and productive members of society.

QUALIFICATIONS

: Master’s Degree or its equivalent from an accredited university Must be eligible for a valid teacher’s certificate, with endorsement in counseling and guidance Successful experience as a teacher or school counselor preferred Ability to use technology to communicate, to plan and provide instruction, to facilitate student learning, to manage data, and to produce and submit required reports, correspondence, and financial information Effective oral and written communication skills Punctuality and regular attendance

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

: Develop, implement, and evaluate an effective school guidance and counseling program. Provide developmental and comprehensive guidance and counseling services for all students as outlined in the comprehensive guidance plan provided by the state of Alabama. Provide new students with an orientation to school procedures and the school’s various opportunities for learning and assist with registration as needed. Assist with completion of the students’ four-year plans. Assist in the placement of individual students with special needs in appropriate educational situations. Follow the procedure for the security and maintenance of students’ educational records. Assist teachers in identifying and interpreting problems that interfere with a student’s ability to learn. Assist students in developing their interest, aptitudes, and values relating to life careers. Analyze and interpret test results for teachers, parents, and students to provide information about abilities, achievement, interests, and needs. Plan steps for modifying the behavior of students, with assistance from principals and teachers. Provide data concerning students’ needs to assist in curriculum evaluation and development in the school. Provide individual and group counseling opportunities that may lead each student to increased personal growth, self-understanding, and maturity. Collaborate with employers, agencies, and other institutions that may be of use to teachers, parents, and students. Help students develop study habits, learn to use their time more effectively and develop other attitudes that make learning easier. Coordinate, plan, and participate in the implementation of the school district and/or state assessment program in conjunction with the principal. Coordinate career assessments and interpret results to students to assist in their career and educational planning. Utilize an established database of school profiles and scholarship/financial aid information related to schools, colleges, and institutions offering post-secondary educational and vocational training opportunities. Coordinate special programs for students and parents concerning Awards Day, College Days, Career Days, Financial-Aid Sessions, and Area Vocational Center Tours. Assist students in developing a curriculum plan and provide a method for documenting and reviewing the plan annually so that they may reach their academic goals. Guide seniors to help them develop and implement appropriate steps regarding their post-high school educational or career plans. Participate in annual Confidentiality training and Mandatory Reporter training. Perform any other duties as assigned.
