VESTAVIA HILLS CITY SCHOOLS JOB TITLE

BCBA Counselor

QUALIFICATIONS

: Minimum 3 years of experience working in a clinical or school setting. Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). Must hold a valid Alabama Teacher’s Certificate with endorsement in special education, preferred. Must meet background clearance as specified by Alabama statutes and State Board of Education regulations.

: Director of Exceptional Children, Director of Student Services, Director of Curriculum and Instruction

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

: Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with the system’s approved compensation plan. Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be those established by the system.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

: Participate as a team member in the identification of and assessment of student’s social, behavioral, emotional, and academic needs. Work in coordination with teachers, administrators, consultants, and other appropriate professionals in conducting Functional Behavior Assessments (FBA) and in developing Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP). Serve as an active participant on building based Problem-Solving Teams. Provide staff training and support in behavior management strategies. Assist in the design, implementation, and follow-up of behavioral management programs for students to remediate behavioral and social problems. Model and coach staff in behavior management strategies. Participate in parent/student meetings regarding behavior interventions. Perform and model de-escalation techniques when an individual is exhibiting escalated and/or aggressive behavior toward himself/herself or toward staff. Provide social skills training to students in the areas of anger management, social skills enhancement, conflict resolution, and appropriate peer interactions. Provide ongoing professional development and support to school staff and district personnel with an emphasis on evidence-based strategies for proactively reducing challenging student behavior. Maintain records and data. Utilize confidential and sensitive information in a professional matter. Analyze behavior data and collaboratively write Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP) to address behaviors that need to be increased or decreased. Train teachers in the documenting and analyzing of behavioral data. Utilize data to assess student needs and use best practice interventions for improved academics, attendance, and discipline. Plan and confer with the classroom teacher concerning any behavioral, social, or personal problems affecting students. Consult with school and district personnel, parents, and community agencies. Maintain professional growth and licensure. Demonstrate a high level of professionalism and work ethic working cooperatively with all system staff. Be regular and punctual in attendance and promptly comply in carrying out the duties of the position. Maintain confidentiality in all Board of Education business. Assume other reasonable and equitable job-related duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

: Ability to read, interpret and follow State Board of Education rules, School Board policies and the appropriate state and federal statutes. Knowledge and understanding of guidance and counseling principles. Knowledge of community resources and services available for student assistance. Effective oral and written communication skills. Positive interpersonal skills with strong leadership skills and experience in training others. Ability to use personal computers and technology to perform needed tasks. Ability to counsel and assist students, parents, and school personnel in the resolution of problems in student learning, behavior and mental health. Ability to analyze date and use data. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Physical and emotional ability and dexterity to perform required work and move about as needed in a fast-paced, high-intensive work environment.
