Full Job Description Addiction Prevention Counselor FLSA Classification Exempt Salary Range/Grade Salary Range:

$43,888 – $50,000 Reports to Director, Counseling and Psychological Services Job Description Summary/objective The Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) Counseling Center provides support, counseling, and therapeutic services with the intent to reduce, prevent, and alleviate any feelings of discomfort or inadequacy, which may include but is not limited to depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, anger, hopelessness, guilt, shame, hurt, stress, abuse, etc. This is done by the delivery of counseling services and therapy from the university counselor through advanced interventions, evidence-based practices, and appropriate theories/approaches. Under general supervision and guided by therapeutic standards and professional codes of ethics, the Addiction Prevention Counselor (APC) will provide counseling and support to students suffering from drug or alcohol dependency, educate students in the best ways help in the recovery process, and collaborate with local inpatient/outpatient facilities on an as needed basis. The APC will design a program of treatment and rehabilitation tailored to student’s individual situation based on knowledge of alcohol/drug dependency and treatment methods. Additionally, the APC educates student-clients about community-based organizations such as Alcoholics Anonymous and social and employment services that may help restore them to productive roles in the community. Maintains case histories and progress reports. Modifies treatment programs based on observation. The APC is responsible for overseeing a caseload that must remain in compliance with University policies and procedures and applicable state and federal laws (e.g., FERPA, Americans with Disabilities Act). The APC is also responsible for developing and maintaining collaborative relationships with team members and various campus stakeholders such as Enrollment Management & Student Success colleagues, academic colleges, Student Development Center staff, Academic Advisors, and others. The Addiction Prevention Counselor will also be responsible for assisting with monthly/annual programming and groups, and establishing effective liaison with on and off-campus local referral resources. The position may some evening and weekend hours to participate in University programs and events or support students experiencing difficulties or crisis. Responsible to the Director of CAPS for providing Substance abuse or addictions services to enrolled SUNO students assigned by the Director. 2. Provides assistance including individual and group counseling to students, faculty, and staff with co-occurring conditions or substance abuse concerns. 3. Assists with crisis intervention as needed. 4. Provides information about various counseling services, and referrals. 5. Maintains accurate and confidential records of student’s intake evaluation and treatment plans, assessments, correspondences, and terminations 6. Assists with presentations at professional workshops, conferences, and other training sessions/seminars to enhance, keep abreast of, and share professional skills. 7. Provides information about various counseling services, referrals and special topics, e.g. alcohol/drug misuse, abuse, and dependency. 8. Provides consultative services to university community within area of expertise (Addictions/Substance Abuse). 9. Keeps abreast of counseling and training issues as they relate to areas of diversity. 10. Establishes effective liaison with on and off-campus referral resources. 11. Attends regular staff meetings and staff developments 12. Provide workshops presentations, and other outreach programs to reach the varied needs of students when appropriate. 13. Assess emotional, addictive, or behavioral problems of students utilizing appropriate instruments/assessments. 14. Keeps a breast of counseling and training issues as they relate to area of diversity, including, but not limited to gender issues, race/ethnicity, gay/lesbian, physically challenged, and returning adult students. Required education and experience Bachelor’s Degree in Addictive Behavior, Psychology, Social Work or related field. A minimum of one-year work experience in an appropriate addictions’ clinical setting, i.e. University Counseling Center, Addictions’ Residential Facilities, or other Rehabilitation agencies. A Certified Counselor in Training pursuing or Enrolled in Master’s Program for Counseling and/or Social Work, and Eligible for full Certification/Licensure within 2 years of employment required.
