Social Work Full Job Description Elementary School Adjustment Counselor Reports To:

Director, K-12 Guidance & SEL Position Overview Collegiate Charter School of Lowell seeks a compassionate, knowledgeable, and team-oriented Elementary School Adjustment Counselor to support the academic and emotional development of our students. This role focuses on providing direct therapeutic support, collaborating with staff and families, and partnering with outside agencies. The ideal candidate is committed to equity, proactive intervention, and student well-being, and brings expertise in social-emotional learning and trauma-informed practices.

Key Responsibilities Direct Counseling and Support Services:

Provide individual and small group counseling to students identified through staff or parent referral. Deliver goal-oriented counseling services addressing self-regulation, behavior, social skills, trauma, and emotional well-being. Develop behavior intervention plans and complete risk assessments when needed. Provide counseling services in accordance with all plans developed for students, including behavior, academic, or wellness-focused supports.

Therapeutic Planning and Collaboration:

Collaborate with school teams to develop therapeutic intervention plans tailored to individual student needs. Consult regularly with teachers, staff, and families to identify strategies for supporting students in and out of the classroom. Serve as a therapeutic resource for school-based staff, offering professional development and modeling best practices in behavior and emotional support.

Crisis Response and Intervention:

Provide crisis support to students experiencing acute emotional distress or behavioral incidents. Implement individual safety plans and follow-up services for students at risk to themselves or others. Act as liaison for coordination with state and local agencies such as DCF and DMH.

Compliance and Documentation:

Serve as an active member of student support and special education teams; participate in eligibility determination and service planning. Complete all documentation and reporting requirements in a timely and compliant manner per district, state, and federal standards. Maintain confidential records and reports regarding student progress and interventions.

Social-Emotional Curriculum and School Climate:

Support and/or deliver SEL programming and classroom-based social-emotional instruction. Collaborate with leadership and colleagues to promote a positive school climate and inclusive learning environment. Participate in schoolwide efforts to build resilience and reduce barriers to learning. Participation in professional development, school-based committees, and student support initiatives is expected. Flexibility to support students across multiple grade levels as needed.

Qualifications:

Valid Massachusetts DESE license as a School Social Worker/School Adjustment Counselor (All Levels or PreK-8). Master’s degree in Social Work, School Counseling, Clinical Mental Health Counseling, or a related field. Experience providing counseling services in a school or child-centered clinical setting. LICSW, LCSW, or LMHC licensure (or in progress), preferred. Experience with special education services and documentation, including behavior plans. Training in crisis prevention/intervention techniques (e.g., CPI). Familiarity with the MA Model for Comprehensive School Counseling and/or ASCA National Model. Understanding of trauma-informed practices and culturally responsive counseling.

Salary:

$65,000 – $85,000 depending on experience
