Position Overview
The Weston Public Schools is seeking a School Counselor for Weston High School. This is a full-time position reporting to the Building Principal and the Head of Guidance. The School Counselor will join our cohesive and collaborative guidance and counseling team, involved in all aspects of the comprehensive school counseling program with a full caseload in grades 9-12. School counselors work extensively with students, parents, community resources, faculty, and administrators. The position applies experience in problem-solving and communications to benefit counseling department operations and curriculum. About the Weston Public Schools
The Weston Public Schools enrolls approximately 2,000 students in pre-kindergarten through grade 12. The school district includes a high school for grades 9-12, a middle school for grades 6-8, an upper elementary school for grades 4-5, and two lower elementary schools for pre-kindergarten through grade 3. Since 1967, Weston has participated in METCO (Metropolitan Council for Educational Opportunity) – a voluntary school integration program that places Boston residents in suburban schools. The Weston METCO program enrolls approximately 166 students (K-12).
Key Responsibilities
Embrace the diversity of the Weston Public Schools by fostering an environment of respect and inclusion
Provide direct support to students and advocating for their social emotional needs; facilitate students’ development of social-emotional skills and strategies
Provide leadership in social emotional programming and curricula developed with responsiveness to student needs; develop and teach college/career-focused guidance seminar curriculum and parent/guardian presentations
Work with students in career and post-secondary planning; write recommendations for private school, college, employment, and other programs; submit applications electronically
Work with students to develop their academic plans and schedules; assist in implementing the master schedule
Facilitate communication and coordination with teachers and parents regarding students’ academic, emotional and behavioral programs
Consult with other counselors regarding the needs of the school, students, and families.
Support students with disabilities, including: case managing 504 Plans; working closely with special educators regarding students’ IEPs and educational progress; reviewing testing; updating education plans
Assist in coordinating standardized testing (PreACT, PSAT, and AP) and school-based
SAT, ACT
Other duties as assigned
Desired Qualifications
Valid Massachusetts School Counselor licensure (5-12)
Demonstrated experience working with high school students as a school counselor
Experience building collaborative relationships with both parents and professionals
Experience using student information systems, Naviance and other widely used programs
Excellent writing and communication skills
Compensation and Benefits
This is a full-time role, represented by the Weston Education Association, and entitled to the same salary schedule as teachers and other professional staff. Additionally, the Weston Public Schools offers a comprehensive benefits package, including subsidized health insurance and participation in the Massachusetts Teachers’ Retirement System.
