Position Title Academic Advisor

Job Description Job Purpose:

Academic Advisors employed in the Academic Advising Center under University College are responsible for providing intrusive academic advising services to freshman students with 29 hours or less, sophomore students with 30-60 hours, and undeclared majors. Academic Advisors also assist students in developing an academic plan to ensure they remain on track as per their academic major curriculum pattern and assist students in connecting with appropriate campus resources.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities — Essential Functions

  • :
    Provide an intentional and intrusive approach to academic advising for a caseload of students classified as freshmen or sophomores.

Ensure that students are prepared to officially declare their major at the end of their freshman year.
3. Evaluate student’s academic records (i.e., ACT/SAT scores, high school or college transcripts, placement tests, etc.) to determine placement into appropriate courses.
4. Work collaboratively with department chairs to provide a dual model of advising to ensure students are advised properly and enrolled in appropriate courses based on their intended major.
5. Identifies options for students to satisfy degree requirements; evaluates and makes recommendations on petitions and amendments in major programs of study; assists students with knowledge of degree completion requirements.
6. Assist students in establishing realistic and attainable academic and career goals. And recommend available options based on personal interests, skills, and abilities.
7. Monitor, track, and record students’ academic progress, mid-term and final grades, and provide intervention measures for at-risk students.
8. Maintain student files and records, document all pertinent student information, and update the computerized information system regarding grades, and changes to student status or record.
9. Review and/or approve various institutional and departmental forms for accuracy such as grade checks, overload petitions, curriculum changes, add/drop, withdrawal from classes, etc.
10. Instruct First Year Seminar course for first-year students.
11. Perform other related duties assigned.

Non-Essential Functions:

Attend events/functions hosted by the unit, departmental training, and professional development seminars, training, and/or conferences as required.
Serve on University College committees.

Direction Received:

Receive supervision from the Director of Student Success and the Executive Director of University College.

Direction Given:

Occasional monitoring and training of student employees as departmental activities may be required on a project-by-project basis.

Job Specifications:

Bachelor’s degree, Master’s Degree preferred in Education, Counseling, Social/Behavioral Sciences, or any other related area is required.
3 to 5 years experience in a higher education setting preferably in an academic advising unit or comparable position.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Previous teaching, counseling, and/or advising experience in a college or high school setting.
Excellent computer skills with a solid working knowledge of computer software to analyze, interpret, and retrieve data for assessing and tracking student information.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Worker Characteristics:
  • Knowledge of university policies and procedures, academic department curriculum patterns, campus resources, and support services.
  • Previous experience using Banner.
  • Advanced knowledge and skills in using office automation software applications such as Microsoft Office, Excel, PowerPoint, and online systems.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of student data and records
  • Must be a team player with the ability to work in a team-oriented environment.
  • Must be task-oriented, detail-oriented, and possess excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Must be student-centered and possess effective listening skills.
  • Ability to work well with people from diverse backgrounds.

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision.
