Job Description

The Mississippi School of the Arts (MSA) is seeking applicants for the position of Counselor at the Mississippi School of the Arts (MSA), a statewide residential school that provides academic education and advanced programs of study in vocal music, theatre, visual arts, dance, media arts, and literary arts. The Mississippi School of the Arts is located on the historic Whitworth College Campus in Brookhaven, Mississippi, which is approximately 60 miles south of Jackson, the state capital.

The Counselor at the Mississippi School of the Arts will work under the direct supervision of the Principal. This position encompasses duties that include, but are not limited to, supporting student efforts in adjusting to the rigorous MSA academic environment; maintaining the student cumulative records; coordinating student course schedules and creating a master teacher schedule; administering tests, and ensuring test security and training of personnel; collaborating with student life personnel to ensure a positive learning experience within a residential environment; providing technical assistance to the teaching staff in implementing educational activities; counseling and group work with students; and other assigned duties and services that are necessary to ensure the success of the Mississippi School of the Arts.#### Examples of work performed in this classification include, but are limited to, the following

  • Counsels students on individual and/or group basis
  • Assists students with personal/social adjustment and development in a residential life setting
  • Assesses the educational needs of students and identify problem areas
  • Coordinates student and teach class schedule development and planning of courses of study
  • Communicates with parents, students, faculty, and staff; conducts parent conferences as needed concerning identification and assessment of student problems while offering advice and guidance
  • Consults with the school staff and other appropriate personnel on individual cases
  • Provides technical assistance to teaching staff in implementing educational activities
  • Compiles assessment data
  • Administers and scores tests
  • Composes correspondence and maintains records and reports
  • Provides conflict resolution counseling, personal counseling, and crisis management counseling as needed
  • Conducts and participates in in-service training
  • Sponsors various school and extracurricular activities, assists students with projects
  • Assists teachers with student supervision
  • Assist and teach students in college and career readiness planning
  • Other related or similar duties as they are performed or required####
Essential Functions:

  • Developing strong communication lines
  • Utilizing developmentally appropriate, effective student interventions and assistance

Minimum Experience/Educational RequirementsEducation:

A Master’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university in the subject area to be taught, certification as required below, ANDFour (4) years of experience related to the duties described above.

ANDCertification:

Possession of a valid Mississippi AA (Master’s) counseling or related license.

Documentation Required:

A copy of Mississippi AA (Master’s) certificate must be submitted with Experience and Training Record.
