Substance Prevention Program SISP
Non- Exempt
General Definition of Work
The Substance Prevention Program Counselor addresses the district’s substance misuse prevention needs by supporting high-risk students in our Recovery High School and Positive Alternatives to Student Suspension (PASS) Programs. The counselor meets with students and families to identify referrals for care, provides training to student services staff on substance misuse prevention and emotional regulation, and offers consultation to school staff to promote prevention efforts. Additionally, the counselor delivers parent events and drug awareness programming to strengthen community-wide prevention initiatives. This is a grant funded position and is an 11-month position.
Qualification Requirements
Must be a licensed School Counselor or School Social Worker, or a related field Must have experience working in a school setting or clinical environment Experience working with high risk students preferred
Certification or training in substance abuse preferred
Valid Driver’s License
Essential Duties
Conducts substance use assessments for referred students and families, making appropriate recommendations for care based upon individual needs
Delivers short-term counseling to students deemed appropriate for this support
Processes substance abuse referrals in a timely manner
Adheres to strict confidentiality and ethical standards
Collaborates with administrators in assigned schools to ensure that they understand best practices for drug-related code of conduct violations
Collaborates with student services professionals at middle and high schools to ensure that they are aware of the availability of substance use support in the community
Collaborates with school staff to support substance use prevention efforts including positive peer groups
Collaborates with PASS and Recovery High School Program Specialist and Learning Facilitators to promote student success
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of substance use disorders and substance misuse treatments
Knowledge of community resources
Skilled in interacting effectively with adolescents and parents
Strong organizational skills
Demonstrated ability to deliver curriculum content
Ability to adapt quickly to function effectively in new environments
Demonstrated cultural competence across diverse populations

Physical Requirements
Must be able to use a variety of equipment and classroom tools such as computers, copiers, calculators, pencils, scissors, and equipment for children with special needs, etc. Must be able to exert a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Due to amount of time spent standing and/or walking, physical requirements are consistent with those for Light Work.
