The Opportunity :
Maureen Joy is seeking a skillful, compassionate, and organized Elementary School Counselor to join our team for the 2025-26 School Year. This role serves as a critical support system for our elementary students and their families, focusing on their social, emotional, and academic development while ensuring all children have access to the resources they need to thrive. About Maureen Joy Maureen Joy Charter School is a K-8 public charter school located in Old East Durham, North Carolina. It was founded in 1997 by a group of dedicated community members who wanted to create a new vision for public schools in Durham. Our school is tuition-free and open to the public, with admission determined by a random lottery. We believe all children can succeed regardless of race, neighborhood, or the income of their families and the children at our school have demonstrated this time and again.
Position Summary:
The Elementary School Counselor serves as a key advocate for student wellbeing through individual and group counseling sessions, crisis intervention, and social-emotional programming. This role requires close collaboration with staff, families, and community organizations to address student needs holistically. The counselor will oversee the school’s SEAD (Social Emotional Academic Development) program, to include training of staff, provide student counseling services, manage attendance interventions, serve as the point person for community support services, and resources for students in foster care or experiencing homelessness. This position combines direct student support with systems-level coordination to create a nurturing school environment where all elementary students can succeed academically, socially, and emotionally.
Qualifications:
Master’s degree in School Counseling, Educational Psychology, or related field Valid school counselor or social work license At least 1 year of experience as a School Counselor or similar position Background clearance and certifications required for working with children As the Elementary Counselor, you will have the opportunity to:
Case Manage Student Services:
Partner with families to identify student needs and provide direct service or facilitate community resources to assist. Serve as a liaison between Maureen Joy and community partners and services.
Lead Professional Development:
Provide professional development to staff on designated topics including, but not limited to, Maureen Joy’s Suicide Risk Assessment and Referral Protocol, mandatory reporting, confidentiality, SEAD programming, and restorative practices. Coordinate services associated with
McKinney Vento:
Attend state training and perform the necessary duties of the school McKinney Vento Coordinator to ensure all families experiencing homelessness know their rights and are receiving appropriate resources and services. Provide Tiered Behavioral Intervention (RTI-B): Serve on RTI-B team and support Tier III scholars as necessary
Essential Responsibilities:
The Elementary School Counselor is responsible for planning and execution of the major projects and responsibilities below: Individual Student Meetings Meet with students in individual and/or group counseling sessions based on student need Respond to teacher and student requests for urgent or same-day meetings Regular scheduled meetings with students with reevaluation of services every 6-weeks OR ongoing work with students towards counseling and/or social skills goals as as dictated on student IEP Relationship building with students through individual meetings, group lunches, and overall presence in building Support students’ mental health needs including but not limited to Collaborating regularly with families, Joy staff, outside professionals, and other stakeholders to support student needs Creating and maintain relationships with outside service providers and community organizations Referring students to outside counseling agencies when needed Crisis Intervention Follow Maureen Joy’s Suicide Risk Assessment and Referral Protocol in order to provide same-day safety checks and make appropriate contact home and community referrals for elementary school students at risk Consult, assist, and partner on safety assessments and crisis interventions in the elementary school Update Maureen Joy’s Suicide Assessment Protocol as needed Social Emotional Academic Development Supervise the design, implementation, and execution of the elementary SEAD (Social Emotional Academic Development) program Collaborate with the Middle School Counselor and school administrators to ensure the school culture plans across grades are complementary Student Attendance Participate in weekly meetings focused on data analysis and action-planning Create attendance intervention plans in coordination with the attendance intervention team Coordinate attendance support services with community agencies as necessary Communicate status of attendance interventions with classroom teachers
