School Counselor 4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 79 Canaras Avenue, Saranac Lake, NY 12983 Saranac Lake Central School District is hiring for a School Counselor. Must have valid Department of Education Certification to be considered for this position.

Job Summary:

The Public School Counselor provides support to students in their personal, social, academic, and career development. They work closely with students, parents, teachers, and administrators to create a safe and positive school environment.

Key Responsibilities:
Academic Support:

Assist students in developing academic plans and goals. Monitor student progress and provide interventions as needed. Support students in overcoming academic challenges and improving study skills. Coordinate with teachers to ensure students’ academic needs are met.

Career Guidance:

Provide resources and guidance for career exploration and planning. Help students understand the connection between education and career opportunities. Assist with college applications, scholarship information, and job search strategies.

Personal and Social Development:

Offer individual and group counseling sessions to address personal and social issues. Develop and implement programs to promote positive behavior and mental health. Provide crisis intervention and support during emergencies. Collaborate with external agencies to provide additional support services.

Program Development:

Design and implement comprehensive counseling programs based on the needs of the student population. Conduct needs assessments and evaluations to measure program effectiveness. Organize and conduct workshops for students, parents, and staff on relevant topics.

Collaboration and Consultation:

Work closely with teachers, parents, and administrators to support student success. Participate in school committees and contribute to school improvement plans. Act as a liaison between the school and community resources.

Record Keeping and Reporting:

Maintain accurate and confidential records of student interactions and progress. Prepare reports for school administration and stakeholders as required. Ensure compliance with legal and ethical standards in counseling practices.

Qualifications:
Education:

Master’s degree in School Counseling or a related field.

Certification:

State certification as a School Counselor.

Experience:

Prior experience in a school counseling role preferred.

Skills:

Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills; ability to work with diverse student populations; strong problem-solving and conflict-resolution abilities.

Work Environment:

Public school counselors typically work in an office within a school setting. They interact with students, staff, and parents regularly and may need to handle stressful situations involving student crises.
