August 2025 “Learn Freely, Soar Boldly” About Hummingbird Learning Collective Hummingbird Learning Collective will be a three-day-a-week homeschool hybrid that nurtures independent thinkers, creative problem-solvers, and lifelong learners. Inspired by Socratic discussions, experiential learning, and real-world skill development, the vision for this approach hopes to encourage children to ask big questions, think critically, and take ownership of their education. Our learners will be active participants in their own journey, tackling hands-on challenges, setting personal goals, and reflecting on their progress. What you’ll do As a Guide at Hummingbird Learning Collective, your role is to facilitate learning, spark curiosity, and mentor students as they navigate their own paths. You’ll create a dynamic, student-centered environment through: Socratic discussions that encourage thoughtful debate and critical thinking Hands-on, project based learning that connects ideas to real-world applications Educational journey’s that are session long challenges, building problem-solving and collaboration skills Learner contracts where students create promises to each other that help them hold themselves and one another accountable Balancing structure and freedom, fostering responsibility and autonomy Assisting with self paced, interactive technology Helping to establish the foundations of this learning model Who we’re looking for You are a passionate educator who believes learning should be engaging, meaningful, and student-driven. You are glad to honour and meet each child where they are at. You are experienced and/or comfortable managing a mixed age group. You see yourself as a mentor and facilitator, encouraging children to explore, create, and develop a love of learning. You trust that children have the ability to learn and grow without heavy adult intervention. You enjoy nature and using the outdoors as an extension of the classroom when possible. You are experienced in planning and implementing games, projects and experiential learning. You have an open mind and feel excited about the idea of creating and growing a learning environment that is outside the box of conventional schooling. You align with the idea of supporting children in learning how to think vs what to think. Experience or interest in Socratic teaching, inquiry-based learning, or alternative education models (Acton Academy, Montessori, Reggio Emilia, Forest Schools, etc.) Background in education, child development, or related fields Enjoy guiding discussions, asking thought-provoking questions, and encouraging independent thinking Excited about working in a small, hands-on learning environment Believe in freedom with responsibility, giving children autonomy while holding them accountable Have experience working with multi-age groups Interested in teaching outside of the conventions of traditional school Enthusiasm for integrating outdoor learning, entrepreneurship, and real-world experiences into education Familiarity with or interest in homeschool hybrids/learning pods/microschools Working schedule Hummingbird Learning Collective will follow a 3 day a week schedule running from August to June. We are workshopping a 7 session model, with each session lasting approximately 6 weeks or less followed by a 1 week break between sessions.
