Job Responsibilities
The First-Year Experience (FYE) Director is responsible for designing, implementing, and evaluating initiatives that support the academic, social, and personal success of first-year students at Spartanburg Community College. As a key leader within the Student Success division, the FYE Director develops programs and services that promote engagement, persistence, and retention of first-year students, with a particular emphasis on students from diverse and underrepresented backgrounds. This position requires strong collaboration with faculty, staff, and community partners to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for first-year students.•

Program Development and Implementation:

Develops and leads a comprehensive First-Year Experience program that addresses the needs of a diverse student population. Oversees orientation programs, including planning, coordination, and assessment, to ensure a smooth transition for new students. Collaborates with the college skills department to design learning communities and co-curricular activities that promote student success. Creates and maintains initiatives to support first-generation, low-income, and underrepresented students in their first year.•

Student Support and Engagement:

Develops and manages programming that fosters student engagement, community building, and a sense of belonging. Coordinates peer mentoring and student leadership programs to provide first-year students with guidance and role models. Partners with other Student Success departments to ensure first-year students have access to academic advising, success coaching, and mental health resources.

  • Collaboration and Partnership:

    Works closely with faculty, staff, and administration to integrate academic and co-curricular efforts in support of first-year success. Develops and fosters partnerships with community organizations to provide resources and opportunities for first-year students. Serves on institutional committees related to student success, retention, and equity.

Assessment and Reporting:

Establishes and monitors key performance indicators (KPIs) for first-year student success, including retention, persistence, and academic performance. Conducts regular assessments of FYE programs to measure effectiveness and identify areas for improvement. Prepares reports and presentations for senior leadership, highlighting the impact of FYE initiatives on student outcomes.•

Leadership and Administration:

Serve in a leadership role supporting our Quality Enhancement Plan. Develops and manages the FYE program budget, ensuring efficient use of resources. Stays current with best practices and research in first-year student success and incorporate findings into program development.
Minimum and Additional Requirements
Bachelor’s degree and experience in student services programs. Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Counseling, or a related field. At least three years of professional experience in student services, academic support, or program management, preferably in a community college setting. Additional Comments
Occasional nights and/or weekends may be required for special events or travel for seminars/conferences.
