CAREER TECHNICAL DIRECTOR QUALIFICATIONS
Master’s Degree or above in career/technical education or educational administration from an accredited institution. A valid Alabama teaching certificate in the field of school administration. Five years successful teaching or administrative experience in career/technical education or other equivalent experience as deemed appropriate by the Superintendent. Must meet the suitability criteria for employment and/or certification/licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457 Such alternatives to the above as the Board may require.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
: Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and their applicable procedures. Knowledge of school law. Knowledge of trends in career/technical education. Knowledge of state and local policies and procedures. Demonstrated interest in human relations and problem-solving. Demonstrated interest in innovative practices. Knowledge of technology equipment, computers, and software. Ability to organize effectively. Ability to speak and write clearly and effectively. Ability to communicate effectively with e-mail. Knowledge and proficiency with computer technology for word processing, budget management, presentations, communications and other job responsibilities. Physical mobility, dexterity, strength and visual acuity to meet student needs and deal with student problems.
JOB GOAL
: To administer local career-technical education programs collaboratively with business and industry; to administer, promote, encourage, and evaluate career-technical programs from a visionary perspective; to establish, continually maintain, and periodically revise policies and plans for program operation and maintenance of curriculum relevancy; and to maintain operating standards required by the State Board of Education.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
: Facilitates the articulation of community and manpower needs into meaningful career/technical programs. Serves as principal of the career technical school, responsible for schedules, curriculum, instruction, personnel, budgets, and student activities. Prepares a strategic plan for career-technical education. Works with appropriate state agencies for approval and financial support of career/technical programs. Plans and prepares annual financial and personnel budgets. Identifies long-range needs for facilities, equipment, and supplies for programs. Schedules facilities for maximum utilization by teachers. Evaluates facilities and equipment annually. Recruits, assesses, recommends and orients new career technical personnel. Plans and/or conducts staff development activities. Works closely with teacher education institutions and state staff to develop effective programs at pre-service and in-service levels. Ensures that career/technical teachers attend professional development conferences and workshops and that technical update hours are earned. Requires teachers to acquire skills to keep pace with technological advancements in the program area. Evaluates teacher performance using the teacher evaluation system. Observes teaching practices in the classroom where career/technical programming is offered. Defines and articulates goals and objectives for programs within the school system. Works with counselors to determine student’s interests and aptitudes for coursework within programs. Requires and facilitates active student organizations. Develops activities and techniques to involve the community in school activities. Provides a system for positive public relations. Collects, organizes, analyzes, and interprets data concerning the performance of students. Utilizes the advisory committee for the overall career/technical program. Participates in non-administrative duties such as hall duty, bus duty, chaperoning, etc. when necessary. Promotes and facilitates career/technical education among community stakeholders. Keeps teachers informed of effective teaching methodology and current literature for “best practices.” Takes leave time in accordance with Board policy and reports all absences in a timely manner. Maintains confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters. Models and maintains high ethical standards. Demonstrates initiative in the performance of assigned responsibilities. Maintains expertise in assigned area to fulfill project goals and objectives. Participates successfully in the training programs offered to increase skill and proficiency related to assignment. Keeps supervisor informed of potential problems or unusual events. Responds to inquiries and concerns in a timely manner. Serves on school/system committees as required or appropriate. Exhibits interpersonal skills to work as an effective team member. Demonstrates support for the school system and its goals and priorities. Demonstrates initiative in identifying potential problems or opportunities for improvement. Assumes other reasonable and equitable job-related duties assigned by the immediate supervisor.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
: The terms of employment shall be in accordance with provisions of the Board’s salary schedule.

Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of professional personnel.
