These services include, but are not limited to, crafting meaningful educational plans, keeping a record of students’ academic progress, connecting students to campus resources and services, and meeting with students periodically to provide feedback and guidance toward successful completion of a degree program and if applicable, transfer to a university or college.

JUNE 15, 2025 The position will be based initially at the Wallace Campus in Dothan. More than one position in the same job classification may be filled from the applicants for this position should another vacancy occur during the search process. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
ESSENTIAL FUNCTION
Advising Services. The employee provides advising services to students in identifying their values, interests, abilities, and in clarifying their academic and career goals.
Provides advising services to new and prospective students that address the academic, instructional, and career guidance needs of students utilizing the Advising Center (advisees).
Directs prospective students to career interest inventories to assist with selecting a major.
Assists College departments by providing prospective students with information on relevant resources and appropriate points of contact.
Explains policies, procedures, and program requirements to assist students in selecting educational and career goals.
Presents information to advisees regarding the Alabama Transfer program.
Interprets testing results relevant to placement decisions; determines student readiness for College programs
Informs students about alternatives, limitations and possible consequences of academic decisions (e.g. adding, dropping and withdrawing from courses; change of program, major and/or transfer institution)
Educates students about course planning and registration processes, refers to available on-and off-campus resources to meet individual needs including career and personal counseling.
Promotes student learning; refer students for tutoring and other support services; provide targeted supports for high-risk students.
Provides training on issues like career development, academic scheduling, and study skills in a group setting or on a one-on-one basis for advisees.
Conducts one-on-one academic advising, career, and transfer advising services to participants using effective communication techniques with various modes of technology.
Provide proactive (intrusive) advising using various formats (e-mail, phone, early alert system, in-person); document all contacts with students; assist students in developing an academic plan and connecting coursework to career path; keep students on career path.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTION
Progression and Retention. Support the Advising function by tracking and retaining students.
Connects with advisees at least three (3) times per semester to provide assistance related to academic and other issues that may affect student academic performance.
Consults with students regarding academic problems or concerns and assists students in obtaining support to meet these specific needs.
Participates in registration, new student orientation, and other advising services.
Encourages retention by providing personal, academic, instructional, and career guidance to address all needs of participants.
Works closely with Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, Business Affairs, and other key divisions to ensure effective collaboration and communication.
Provide assistance to develop, implement, and assess student engagement activities related to retention, persistence, and degree or credential completion.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTION
Records and Reporting. The employee collects, compiles, and submits data related to the effective and efficient operation of the program.
Ensures participant contact and personal data is up to date and secure for reporting purposes.
Ensures the effectiveness of the advising process by maintaining electronic advising notes for all assigned advisees and using information in the Banner system (or some other system) to advise students appropriately.
Collect and analyze data relevant to enrollment and retention outcomes.
Prepare reports, materials, and formal presentations for the department.
Utilizes DegreeWorks (a web-based tool) to monitor students’ progress toward degree completion.
Provide assistance to develop, implement, and deliver academic information/advisor training sessions for faculty, Student Services personnel, and all other staff affiliated with student advising.
Compiles reports and provides information as requested by the director.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTION

Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college is required.
Two years of full-time work experience in an educational setting is required.
Ability to work nonstandard hours specifically evenings and weekends is required.
ADVISORY COMMITTEE
The President will appoint an Advisory and Interview Committee to include representatives of the College faculty and staff. This committee will employ appropriate procedures, including the review of application packets, interviews, and demonstration of competency, to determine which applicants are to be recommended to the President for further consideration. From all the applications received, an advisory committee will select the applicants to be interviewed. Applicants must travel at their own expense for interviews that are conducted in person.
