  • ABOUT OUR LOCATION
  • The Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind North Campus is located in Decatur, Alabama.

The campus occupies a beautiful location that sits on Highway 31 in South Decatur. The expansion of programs in Decatur creates new opportunities for us to serve the local communities. Specifically, the Short-Term Programs department is responsible for providing the highest level of care and education for students who are blind and visually impaired in the state of Alabama from public school, private school, or homeschool. Students attend three, four, or five day courses throughout the school year that focus on the Expanded Core Curriculum. While remaining in their local school district, students are able to attend in-person and virtual courses at the AIDB North Campus and at AIDB Regional Centers across the state.

  • POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
  • Minimum high school diploma or General Education Diploma.

Minimum three (3) years of work experience in an educational and/or residential setting.

Must be Servsafe certified OR become certified within 3 months of employmentUpon offer of employment, the applicant must submit to a fingerprint background check at an agency designated and paid by AIDB.

  • PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Proven work experience with individuals who are blind or visually impaired.

Commercial Drivers License (CDL school bus).

  • POSITION REQUIREMENTS
  • Must demonstrate competency in reading and writing Braille by scoring 80% or better on AIDB Braille Skills Assessment Inventory within the first twenty-four (24) months of employment.

Orientation and Mobility training required within twelve (12) months of hire.

Must complete and maintain CPR/First Aid, Medication, and Behavior Management training within 12 months of employment.

Must complete a Foundation of Visual Impairment e-Learning course within the first twelve (12) months.

Must be willing and able to work a flexible schedule to nclude some weekends.

Implement Independent Living goals as written by STP teachers.

Ensure students observe the proper bedtime and make routine bed checks.

Assist and supervise students in preparing meals.

Supervise and engage in housekeeping chores as needed.

Keep prompt and accurate records as required.

Report issues, concerns, or needs to the Director.

Administer medicine as directed by HCS and/or contract nurses and keep accurate records.

Maintain laundry needs such as: wash, dry, fold, iron, and assist, as needed.

Address emergency situations in a calm and logical manner and notifying appropriate personnel immediately/as required.

Teach and model for students appropriate manners for daily living, appropriate dress, and proper conduct.

Complete and submit daily dormitory chronicles and other required and necessary forms.

Protect confidentiality of student information.

Must be able to physically assist students as required.

Must be able to lift 50 pounds, do light housework chores, climb stairs, and be able to participate in recreational activities.

Perform other relevant duties as assigned by the Director.

Upon offer of employment, the applicant must submit to a fingerprint background check at an agency designated and paid by AIDB.”
