ABOUT OUR LOCATION
The Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind North Campus is located in Decatur, Alabama. The campus occupies a beautiful location that sits on Highway 31 in South Decatur. The expansion of programs in Decatur creates new opportunities for us to serve the local communities. Specifically, the Short-Term Programs department is responsible for providing the highest level of care and education for students who are blind and visually impaired in the state of Alabama from public school, private school, or homeschool. Students attend three, four, or five day courses throughout the school year that focus on the Expanded Core Curriculum. While remaining in their local school district, students are able to attend in-person and virtual courses at the AIDB North Campus and at AIDB Regional Centers across the state.

AIDB. POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum high school diploma or General Education Diploma. Minimum three (3) years of work experience in an educational and/or residential setting. Must be ServSafe certified OR become certified within 3 months of employment Upon offer of employment, the applicant must submit to a fingerprint background check at an agency designated and paid by
AIDB. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Special Education, or Child Development from an accredited college/university. Successful work experience with individuals who are blind or visually impaired. Commercial Driver’s License (CDL school bus).
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
Must demonstrate competency in reading and writing Braille by scoring 80% or better on AIDB Braille Skills Assessment Inventory within the first twenty-four (24) months of employment. Orientation and Mobility training required within twelve (12) months of hire. Must complete and maintain CPR/First Aid, Medication, and Behavior Management training within 12 months of employment. Must complete a Foundation of Visual Impairment e-Learning course within the first twelve (12) months. Assist with the intake of students as they arrive for courses, collaborating with parents, nursing staff, and other relevant personnel, under the direction of the supervisor. Create and lead a variety of after-hours activities correlated to the Expanded Core Curriculum for students attending Short-Term Programs courses. Ensure implementation of Independent Living goals as written by STP teachers. Consult and collaborate with teachers and parents regarding the impact of visual impairment on the development of Expanded Core Curriculum-related skills. Keep abreast of current research and teaching strategies of the Expanded Core Curriculum for implementation in the residential settings. Cooperate with STP teachers, staff, and district TVIs in planning and implementing the unique instructional program for students who are blind and visually impaired. Must be able to physically assist students as required. Must be able to lift 50 pounds, do light housework chores, climb stairs, and be able to participate in recreational activities. Must be willing and able to work a flexible schedule to include some weekends. Serve as a role model to students with professional behaviors. Protect confidentiality of student information. Perform other relevant duties as assigned by the Director. Upon offer of employment, the applicant must submit to a fingerprint background check at an agency designated and paid by AIDB .”
