Position Summary:
The Veterans Peer Specialist provides support to veterans living with mental health, substance use, or co-occurring conditions by offering shared lived experience, mentorship, and guidance through recovery. This position is designed to support veterans in achieving their goals by fostering hope, facilitating access to services, and promoting self-advocacy.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Use personal experience as a veteran to engage and build trusting relationships with veteran clients.
Provide peer support and mentoring in both individual and group settings.
Assist veterans in identifying personal goals related to recovery, housing, employment, and wellness.
Support clients in navigating systems of care, including VA and community-based services.
Model effective coping techniques, self-help strategies, and wellness tools.
Facilitate connections with veteran-specific resources and community organizations.
Maintain documentation of services provided in accordance with agency and funding requirements.
Collaborate with clinical teams, case managers, and other service providers to ensure holistic support.
Participate in ongoing training, supervision, and professional development.
Required Qualifications:
U.S. military veteran with an honorable discharge.
Certification or training as a Peer Specialist (or willingness to obtain).
High school diploma or GED.
Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation (if outreach is required).
Preferred:
Prior experience in peer support or human services.
Knowledge of the VA system and veteran-specific challenges.
Bilingual abilities.
Work Environment:
Primarily office and community-based, with occasional travel to outreach sites, homes, or healthcare settings.
May involve occasional evening or weekend hours based on program needs.
