Hiring Department Academic Advising Job Description The Academic Advisor I provides direct academic advising services to undergraduate students. This entry-level role supports student development through one-on-one advising, outreach, and coordination of academic support services under general supervision.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Advisement:
Advise assigned undergraduate students on academic planning, course registration, and university policies and procedures
Career alignment: Assist students in identifying educational and career goals, ensuring alignment with major and career outcomes
Academic monitoring: Monitor and provide proactive intervention for at-risk students; outreach to identified students struggling with coursework
Student records: Maintain accurate advising notes and student records in advising systems; assist students in navigating planning tools and creation of graduation plan
Campus support: Assist with Advising & Registration (A&R), recruitment, retention, and outreach programs and events; provide assigned department support
Student involvement & success: Make referrals to appropriate student support campus resources; be knowledgeable of campus organizations and opportunities, promoting student involvement
Attend team meetings and engage in professional development activities to support continuous learning and growth
Shift This position is primarily office based with occasional evening or weekend events. Minimum Qualifications A Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 1 year of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary Preferred Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in education, counseling, student affairs or related field
0-2 years of relevant experience in academic advising or student support services
Strong interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills
Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
Basic understanding of degree requirements and academic policies
Anticipated Hiring Range The anticipated hiring range for this position has been established as $40,000 to $42,500 annually. Salary is determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to, the individual’s particular combination of education, skills, and experience, as well as organizational requirements.
