These specialists are typically individuals who are in recovery themselves and have undergone specific training to professionally support others facing similar challenges.

Objectives and Interventions of PS Services Development of Natural Supports:

Enhancing coping and self-management skills.

Community Re-entry Support:

Assisting individuals with community reintegration following hospitalization. Emphasis on

Personal Growth:

Focusing on personal safety, self-worth, confidence, growth, community connection, boundary setting, self-advocacy, personal fulfillment, and developing effective communication skills.

Skill Development:

Acquiring, developing, and expanding rehabilitative skills necessary for recovery.

Specific Interventions Self Help:

Cultivating the individual’s ability to make informed, independent choices and developing a network of contacts for support.

System Advocacy:

Assisting individuals in discussing their experiences with mental illness publicly and addressing related issues.

Individual Advocacy:

Supporting individuals in managing their healthcare, including discussing medication concerns and scheduling medical appointments.

Crisis Support:

Developing personal crisis plans and providing feedback on relapse signs.

Work Schedule and Program Requirements Flexible Scheduling:

Work schedules vary based on assigned client needs.

Staffing Ratios:

PS staff groups may not exceed a 1:9 ratio Responsibilities and Duties of a

PS Specialist Program Management:

Directing, coordinating, and managing comprehensive mental health programs in full compliance with laws and regulations.

Service Provision:

Delivering skill-building activities, educational sessions on substance abuse, daily living skills enhancement, and case management.

Training, Skills, and Certification Requirements Certification:

Must be a North Carolina Certified Peer Support Specialist.

Recovery Experience:

Specialists must be well-established in their own recovery and not be family members of the individuals receiving services.

Education:

A high school diploma or GED is required.

Training:

Completing specific training for PS services within the first 90 days of employment, including crisis response.

Diverse Environments:

Specialists work in a variety of settings and must be able to adapt to flexible schedules. Certification as a Peer Support Specialist, which requires completion of a state-approved training program and passing a certification exam. Lived experience with mental health and/or substance use recovery. Valid Driver’s License and Insurance. High School Diploma or GED. Basic Computer Literacy Skills. Own Personal Computer. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to listen effectively and communicate clearly. Understanding of recovery principles and person-centered practices. Ability to maintain professional boundaries and adhere to ethical guidelines. This certification and role are recognized and regulated by state health departments or certifying bodies, which ensures that all specialists meet a standard level of competency and ethics in their practice. The aim is to harness personal recovery experiences to provide support, hope, and guidance to others, enhancing overall mental health and substance use disorder recovery processes.
