I have a neuromuscular disorder called Spinal Muscular Atrophy that causes muscle weakness. For the most part, I rely on help to accomplish my activities of daily living (ADLs). Before I get into the job, here’s a little about me: I live in Covington with my parents and three dogs. I’m currently enrolled at LSUA online, majoring in history. My goal is to transfer to LSU’s MLIS program and be a librarian. I’m an avid reader, movie buff, horror lover (the real world is much scarier,) and sweet tooth. And of course, I am a nerd for history. I strive for a life that is as normal as one can get in my situation, but to do basic tasks, I require assistance. Things I may require help with include but aren’t limited to: transferring between my chair and bed, transportation for medical appointments, grocery shopping, and social activities, as well as bathing, grooming, toileting, food prep, and light housework (laundry, dishes, and making my bed are the most common.) For this position, experience is preferred but not required. A driver’s license is required as is a reliable form of transportation and reliable child care, if applicable. Applicants must also be comfortable around dogs. Currently, I am hiring for a PRN position (or two) to cover shifts when my current attendants call in. The hours are 11:00 am to 11:00 pm. If you have certain days you are available and would like to be on call, we can work around them. The pay rate is $15.20 and is paid for through a state-funded Medicaid waiver. Unfortunately, the pay is non-negotiable because of this, but it is higher than most local nursing homes and a much more personal experience. The state also requires a background check.
