A personal care assistant is a student assistant who works under the direction of a certified staff member to support and assist in providing instructional, behavioral and functional programs. They also provide personal care services to a student with disabilities who regularly require one-on-one assistance to maintain appropriate and equitable participation in the school setting.

Such support and assistance includes:
  • Handle student’s personal needs (i.e. toileting, diapering, specialized feeding, if warranted) for the purpose of providing care to the student whose primary area of concern is of medical orientation (mild-moderate lifting may be required)
  • Provide support and assistance in the use of medical equipment (i.e. augmentative communication devices; activities of daily living and monitoring of health and behavior).
  • Participate in specialized training related to specific and individualized needs of the student
  • Help prepare, collect and set-up materials for student participation, following teacher direction
  • Provide instructional, behavioral or physical assistance to students individually or in small groups at the direction of the teacher to reinforce and follow up instruction
  • Guide independent study, enrichment work and remedial work set up and assigned by the teacher; check notebooks, supervise testing and make-up work as assigned by teacher
  • Maintain daily activity logs for assigned student
  • Alert teacher(s) to any problem or information regarding the student
  • Serve as the primary source of information for your assigned student to help substitute teachers
  • Maintain the same high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students as is expected of all educators
  • One-on-one review of material taught by certified staff
  • Implementation of positive behavior support plans
  • Services may be provided in an inclusion or pull-out setting as recommended in the student’s IEP
    Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist the Principal and all school staff in maintaining a safe and orderly school environment
  • Assist the special education and regular education teachers in the delivery of appropriate instructional and tutorial strategies as per the Individualized Education Program (IEP)
  • Assist in the implementation of therapy programs developed by all related service providers
  • Adapt to the student’s mode of communication as necessary for instructional purposes
  • Collect observational and academic data for the purpose of progress monitoring
  • Assist student’s safe transitions to/from locations and environments within and around the school
  • Respond appropriately to emergency situations as per standing orders and other policies and procedures
  • Perform other tasks within the expectation of this job category and/or assume such other responsibilities as may be assigned or delegated by the Principal or Director of Special Education
