Full-time Monday-Friday 8 am

  • 5 pm, with regular weeknight and some weekend and holiday hours Background Founded in 1983, Good Shepherd has grown to become the largest provider of services to the hungry and homeless in the Cape Fear region.

Programs and services include a soup kitchen, food salvage program, day and night shelters, on-site medical clinic, housing-focused case management, and supportive housing for homeless Veterans and chronically homeless individuals with disabilities. The organization has 40 part

  • and full-time staff and more than 500 volunteers.

Good Shepherd has worked diligently and intentionally to move beyond serving merely as a safety net for hungry and homeless guests, devoting equal time and resources to transitioning our guests back to housing and stability in the community. This commitment is reflected in our mission: To feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, and foster transition to housing. Position Summary Good Shepherd Center is seeking an experienced human services professional to provide case management services to individuals at Driftwood, a Permanent Supportive Housing complex owned by Cape Fear Collective, where Good Shepherd Center provides supportive services. This facility has 15 units of housing for individuals who were chronically homeless and have a mental health or cognitive disability. The on-site Case Manager must demonstrate a great deal of flexibility in their approach to the many facets of the role. The ideal candidate will possess knowledge of issues related to homelessness, mental health, and best practices in service delivery. This individual would report directly to the Housing Services Manager with additional supervision by the Homeless Services Director. Knowledge of and experience with Homeless Management Information Systems, HUD Continuum of Care, Permanent Supportive Housing and Housing First framework preferred. Responsibilities Specific responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

  • Providing daily case management and service referral to tenants;
  • Assisting residents in setting and working toward individualized goals such as those related to increasing income and supporting continued housing stability;
  • Assisting participants in the development of strengths-based/solution-focused practices to navigate interactions as a neighbor, troubleshoot conflict, etc.;
  • Providing regular follow-up to tenants to evaluate continued stability and connect with additional resources as needed;
  • Assisting residents with life skills development such as healthy housekeeping, household budgeting, etc.;
  • Maintaining detailed case notes on each resident’s goals, needs, service connections, and progress;
  • Educating residents on their rights and responsibilities as a tenant;
  • Creating and maintaining consistent, professional communication channels, both verbal and written, that are effective with tenants, agency team, property management colleagues, and others;
  • Keeping abreast of and utilizing Best Practices (e.g. trauma-informed approach, harm reduction);
  • Ensuring that data is collected and entered in a timely manner into appropriate systems;
  • Demonstrating ability to interact affectively with tenants, showing both compassion and consistency;
  • Performing other tasks and duties as assigned. Education, Skills, & Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Social Work, three years’ experience in a social services setting or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in mental health preferred;
  • passion for GSC’s mission and a commitment to working as part of a team toward ending hunger and homelessness in our region;
  • ability to balance compassion with consistency and respect for established policy;
  • commitment to social work Code of Ethics and modeling ethical practice for others;
  • excellent communication skills (electronic, face to face, community presentations, with clients, staff, volunteers, and community members);
  • conflict resolution and de-escalation skills
  • demonstrated track record of success in social services case management;
  • proficiency in Microsoft Office programs and service databases. Knowledge of Homeless Management Information Systems (HMIS) preferred;
  • energetic, confident in abilities, creative and with a sense of humor.
