Summary:
The Mental Health and Disability Supervisor leads and coordinates the delivery of mental health and disability services across the Head Start programs. This key leadership role ensures that children with identified or suspected special needs receive timely, effective services in collaboration with education staff, families, mental health consultants, and community partners. The Supervisor will oversee the Mental Health/Disability Advocates and serve as a resource and mentor to classroom and center leadership teams.
Primary duties:
Supervise, train, mentor, and evaluate FSAs and Home Visitors/Parent Educators. Ensure all mental health, special needs, and disability-related services meet Head Start Performance Standards, IDEA requirements, DHR regulations, and ACHR policies. Monitor the quality and timeliness of referrals, screenings, service delivery, follow-up, and documentation. Provide regular coaching, training, and technical assistance to Advocates, classroom staff, and Center Supervisors regarding mental health and special education best practices. Coordinate with ACHR’s contracted mental health consultants to ensure appropriate consultation and support services to children, staff, and families. Lead the planning, implementation, and tracking of social-emotional screenings (e.g., e-DECA) and developmental assessments across the program year. Oversee the maintenance and accuracy of all special services data in ChildPlus, including screenings, referrals, diagnostics, IEPs/IFSPs, and service plans. Ensure appropriate implementation of classroom management and mental wellness programs, including Conscious Discipline and other agency-approved strategies. Facilitate monthly staff wellness meetings to promote self-care, stress management, and mental health awareness. Review and oversee case management of children with identified or suspected disabilities or mental health needs. Participate in case conferences, IEP/IFSP meetings, multidisciplinary team meetings, and family conferences as needed. Ensure families are engaged and supported in the referral, diagnostic, and service planning processes. Support classroom staff and Center Supervisors with strategies to promote inclusive practices and positive behavior management. Serve as the primary liaison to community partners, LEAs, mental health providers, and other relevant agencies regarding mental health and disability services. Coordinate and participate in interagency meetings to ensure collaborative service delivery. Represent ACHR professionally at trainings, conferences, and community events. Maintain complete and accurate program records for monitoring and reporting purposes, including compliance with PIR (Program Information Report) requirements. Monitor service timelines to ensure compliance with IDEA Part B and C regulations. Analyze data related to mental health and disability services to inform program improvement efforts. Ensure confidentiality and ethical standards are upheld in all aspects of service delivery.
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Psychology, Special Education, Early Childhood Education, or a related field.
Experience:
Minimum of three (3) years’ experience working with young children (0-5) in mental health, special education, or disability services. Minimum of two (2) years’ experience supervising or coaching staff. Strong knowledge of IDEA, Head Start Performance Standards, and early childhood best practices.
Computer Skills:
Must be proficient in (or able to quickly learn) MS applications and Publisher and new ways of using these and related programs so can work efficiently, share information, effectively work on projects with other staff and as needed help others learn more about the software
Other Skills/Ability:
Must have excellent writing & proof-reading skills
