ABOUT THE ROLE
The Student Life Activities Coordinator (SLAC) is responsible for the daily and long-range development, implementation, and evaluation of planned student activities at the Alabama School for the Blind (ASB). The SLAC will engage our student body and staff in fostering a welcoming, supportive, and inclusive environment that promotes student learning, academic success, and personal growth.
ABOUT YOU
You will play a vital role in the lives of our blind and visually impaired students by teaching them to become independent. You will become part of the miracles that happen every day at ASB by planning activities and events for our blind and visually impaired students. You will demonstrate flexibility, positive attitude, professional maturity, and a dedicated work ethic.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED). Minimum three (3) years of work experience. Minimum one (1) year of recreation activity planning. Valid Alabama Driver’s License and be able to be covered by the AIDB insurance carrier.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s Degree in Education or related field from an accredited college/university. Experience and/or knowledge of AIDB’s student life programs or working with persons who are blind or visually impaired. Commercial Driver’s License (CDL school bus) CPR/First Aid Certification
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Must be certified by the American Red Cross in Aquatics with Senior Life Saving or willing to obtain within the first twelve (12) months of employment and maintain certification throughout tenure. Must be able to obtain certification in CPR and First Aid within the first twelve (12) months of employment. Must be able to obtain an Alabama School Bus License and CDL within the first eighteen (18) months of employment. Must complete Managing Crisis Safely training within the first twelve (12) months of employment. Must demonstrate competency in reading and writing Braille by scoring 80% or better on the AIDB Braille Skills Assessment Inventory within the first eighteen (18) months of employment. Must complete Orientation and Mobility class within the first twelve (12) months of employment.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
Develop and implement a calendar of recreational, team-building, independent living, and social activities for students. Ensure activities are inclusive and meet the interests/needs of a diverse student population. Encourage participation among residents by building relationships and promoting activities through announcements, flyers, or digital platforms. Provide supervision during activities to ensure safety, participation, and appropriate behavior. Invite guest speakers, arrange field trips, and develop school service opportunities. Must possess excellent written and oral communication, basic office skills: completing forms, maintaining inventory, providing budgetary documentation, and filing. Must have knowledge of Microsoft Office products (Word, Outlook, and Excel). Must possess initiative and be a team player. Must demonstrate maturity, self-motivation, and the ability to exercise sound judgment. Must be able to physically assist with the physical needs of assigned wheelchair or physically disadvantaged consumers as their needs dictate. Must be able to work evenings and weekends. Performs other duties as assigned. Upon offer of employment, the applicant must submit to a fingerprint background check at an agency designated and paid by
