The Parents as Teachers (PAT) model is an evidenced-based early childhood home visiting program that builds strong communities, thriving families, and children who are healthy, safe, and ready to learn. Certified parent educators who implement the Parents as Teachers model emphasize parent-child interaction, development-centered parenting, and family well-being in their work with families. This is a full-time position made possible by a three-year grant from the Department of Children’s Affairs – Office of School Readiness. This position’s establishment and continuance is dependent upon the availability of funding from this grant and/or other resources.

Qualifications:

Bachelor or four-year degree in early childhood education, social work, health, psychology or a related field is recommended and preferred, or a two-year degree/60 college hours in early childhood education or a related field. Experience working with young children and/or parents is also recommended. Strong communication and interpersonal skills (e.g., nonjudgmental, objective, reflective, empathic, patient, tactful) Ability to establish rapport with families and empower them by building on their strengths Strong organizational and record keeping skills Ability to work independently and be self-motivated (often in the field) Computer skills; including web browsing, e-mail, Internet, and word-processing The parent educator must complete the Parents as Teachers Foundation and Model Implementation Training before delivering PAT services. Essential Functions (must be able to perform these functions, with or without a reasonable accommodation): Provides the planning, coordination, implementation, and reporting of family visit and parent support services for families participating in the Parent as Teachers Program. Conducts personal (home/community-based) visits using the Parents as Teachers curriculum on a weekly or bi-weekly basis ensuring integrity of the PAT model and all essential requirements of the program. Provides parent group connections focusing on the primary areas of emphasis: parent-child interaction, development centered parenting, and family well-being; Schedules, attends and leads these events as assigned. Completes developmental, health, vision and hearing screenings for each enrolled child annually. Assists in linking families to community resources and services provided by ESWA and other community partners to address issues related to education, financial wellness, healthcare, housing and other basic needs. Promotes program awareness and participation through community networking, involvement with local agencies, parents and other service providers involved in early care and education. Participates in initial intake interviews, assessments, and other eligibility activities for enrolling new families as appropriate. Supports, monitors and documents families’ participation in Parents as Teachers services and other program activities provided in community-based sites. Provides statistical and programmatic reports as scheduled in a timely and efficient manner. Communicates regularly with supervisor, Parents as Teachers team members, ESWA staff and community partners ensuring that all enrolled families are aware of and have access to services according to ESWA expectations and consistent with the PAT Model. Accurately inputs all data and progress information into the PAT database systems within the time specified. Provides and maintains proper, updated and accurate documentation on each child and family, ensuring program compliance with regulatory and funding partner agencies. Maintains accountability of inventory of supplies, materials and equipment essential to the operation of the program and follows proper procedures for new acquisitions and purchases. Participates in planning, developing and coordinating yearly program calendar which reflects a variety of enriching, educational and extracurricular activities for children, families and team members. Maintains effective communications with Parents as Teachers coordinator, parent educators, other ESWA staff, parents and community service providers through use of meetings, conferences, newsletters, memos, etc. Stays current on issues pertaining to early childhood development and education by participating in on-going training and professional development opportunities including seminars, conferences, in-house training and through personal research. Collaborates with educational, medical and community resource partners to obtain optimal results of First Teacher services. Maintains a positive working relationship with team members, parents, community partners, and collaborating agencies through active listening, open and honest communication, encouragement and shared decision-making. Observes all safety procedures and personnel policies. Regular attendance, as outlined in ESWA policy, is required. Other duties as assigned. Skills, knowledge, and abilities : (these are required to enable job holder to perform the essential functions of the job). Must be able to interact cordially and productively with a variety of people. Must be able to market Easterseals West Alabama and explain the mission to the general public. Must possess basic computer skills. Must possess excellent organizational and time management skills. Must be able to take initiative, make decisions and work well with little supervision. Must be able to keep information confidential. Must be able to read, write and communicate clearly in English. Must be able to maintain an effective working relationship with, and among team members and co-workers while motivating them to their best performance. Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including some evenings and/or Saturdays each month. Must be able to function in a hectic work environment with occasional periods of high stress. Must have reliable means of transportation, a valid drivers’ license, liability automobile insurance and be insurable through the agency’s insurance carrier. Must be able to travel independently and frequently including occasional overnight travel.

Requirements:
