HUD-VASH

program include but are not limited to the following: Develops working relionships and agreements with other organizions and directly coordines with the designed Public Housing Authority(PHA) regarding housing voucher applicion and award process for each veteran. Regularly conducts and participes in outreach activities including field interviews, assessments and referrals for homeless veterans contacted in the community, shelters, and “on the streets,” as well as those who are referred by VA residential programs, medical centers or outpient clinics. Evalues the veteran’s situion, abilities, and capabilities, and arrives a reasoned conclusion including an assessment of vulnerability and priority for admission. Assesses

  • risk factors and develops a preliminary plan, involving the veteran and family or significant others, and performs an insightful assessment of serious and compliced cases involving psychiric illness which may also include, castrophic medical condition, dementia, traumic brain injuries, and other high risks diagnoses.

Provides referral to VA medical and mental health inpient and outpient trement and to other VA services including VA benefits, as well as community-based social services and other non-VA entitlement programs. Develops psychosocial trement plans, actively involving the veteran and their family or significant others, in coordinion with interdisciplinary team members, based on the psychosocial assessments, including goals for clinical trement. Using known resources, the incumbent makes initial and continuing decisions coordining the veteran’s care through linking and referral to VA medical facilities or Regional Offices and other VA and non-VA services and provides independent consultion and makes recommendion to the interdisciplinary team on course of action. Provides direct mental health and substance abuse services for veterans and family members or significant others in support of the veteran’s trement. Gives advice, guidance, emotional support and other assistance and provides individual and group counseling services as well as crisis management services needed to maintain the veteran safely in his or her residence.

Licensure:

Persons hired or reassigned to social worker positions in the GS-0185 series in VHA must be licensed or certified by a ste to independently practice social work the master’s degree level. Current ste requirements may be found by going to .

  • For the GS-11 grade level and above, the candide must be licensed or certified.
  • Exception GS-9: VHA may waive the licensure or certificion requirement for persons who are otherwise qualified, pending completion of ste prerequisites for licensure/certificion examinions.

This exception only applies the GS-9 grade level. For appointments the GS-9 grade level, VHA social workers who are not licensed or certified the time of appointment must become licensed or certified the independent, master’s level within three years of their appointment as a social worker. Most stes require two years of post-MSW experience as a prerequisite to taking the licensure/certificion exam, and VHA gives social workers one additional year to pass the licensure/certificion exam. In stes such as California, Washington, and others where the prerequisites for licensure exceed two years, social workers must become licensed the independent, master’s level within one year of meeting the full ste prerequisites for licensure. Skill in independently conducting psychosocial assessments and trement interventions to a wide variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural, ethnic, educional and other diversified backgrounds.
