Job Description

Domestic Violence Shelter Advocate Safe Harbor Domestic Violence Program Pearl River, LA 70452 Safe Harbor is seeking a compassionate and dedicated candidate to join our team of shelter advocates on the east side of St. Tammany Parish. This position is part-time, and the primary schedule will consist of 2 12-hour shifts from 8A-8P every Saturday and Sunday and may occasionally be asked to cover shifts throughout the week.

Job Description:

The domestic violence advocate will advocate on behalf of survivors of domestic violence and their children, help locate appropriate community resources to meet survivors’ needs, and provide crisis intervention, danger assessment, safety planning, and empowerment advocacy by focusing on the whole individual. This role will also include facilitating recovery, growth, resilience, and healing by fostering trust and safety. The domestic violence advocate may also be asked to provide community awareness about domestic violence to improve the community response to the needs of survivors and their children. We are a culturally diverse program and shelter, which means we serve survivors from a variety of backgrounds living closely together. It is important to be respectful of those differences and to provide culturally competent and sensitive services.

General Duties:
  • Provide trauma-informed services using best practices.
  • Complete all file and operations documentation accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Complete reports as assigned by the Executive Director and Shelter Supervisor.
  • Abide by grantor policies and regulations.
  • Any other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Specific Duties:

1. Monitor/answer the crisis line at the shelter facility. 2. Provide crisis intervention, danger assessment, and safety planning with hotline callers. 3. Assist in developing an individualized safety plan with survivors. 4. Provide intake and referral services to assess the needs of survivors. 5. Provide support services, including advocacy and transportation as needed, to ensure survivors can access appropriate resources. 6. Provide domestic violence counseling to help survivors deal with the impact of domestic violence. 7. Assist with and/or facilitate empowerment and support group sessions as needed. 8. Advocate for survivors individually and as a group using systems intervention to obtain needed community resources. 9. Ensure compliance with program policies and procedures. 10. Conduct outreach activities, placing domestic violence literature and educational materials in public areas within the community. 11. Assist in public awareness and fundraising events as needed. 12. Be available for on-call emergencies. 13. Secure a minimum of 30 hours of continual training annually. 14. Maintain and submit monthly statistical data. 15. Maintain and complete all operational logs and documentation required by the program.

Required Qualifications/Experience:
  • High School Diploma/equivalent/or work-related experience
  • Ability to work flexible hours.
  • Reliable transportation, automobile liability coverage, valid driver’s license
  • Experience in working with diverse populations.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of our survivors/location/information.
  • Ability to maintain appropriate boundaries.
  • Ability to perform household upkeep and cleaning chores.
  • Physical abilities to perform job duties include the ability to push, pull, lift and bend.
  • Must be able to respond and move quickly in a crisis.
  • Must be able to lift 20 pounds. Preferred Qualifications/Experience
