Job Title:
Parent Educator/Screener Responsible to: Early Childhood/Parents as Teachers Director
Qualifications:
Individuals must qualify for training as a parent educator by meeting two of the following criteria:
Certification and/or a four-year degree in either Early Childhood Education, Early Childhood Special Education, Elementary Education, Vocational Home Economics, Family and Consumer Sciences or Child Development and demonstrated ability in working with young children and their parents;
A two-year associate degree or two-year certificate program in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or Nursing and demonstrated ability in working with young children and their parents;
Sixty semester hours or more of credit from an academic degree granting institution which is contained within the United States Department of Education’s Directory of Post-Secondary Institutions and two years of successful experience in a program working with young children and their parents as approved by DESE;
Five years of successful experience in a program working with young children and their parents as approved by DESE and a high school diploma or equivalent.
Individuals must successfully complete the DESE approved training in parent education regardless of previous training.
Effective interpersonal skills – strong communication skills, able to relate to people of diverse backgrounds, outgoing, empathic, non-judgmental, patient, tactful.
Primary Functions:
The role of the parent educator in helping parents is to work with families in the following ways:
Maintain rapport and develop a relationship with the family.
Provide appropriate child development and neuroscience information.
Help parents develop and hone their observation skills.
Support and reinforce the importance of the parent’s role as teachers of their children.
Solicit and respond to parents’ questions and concerns.
Connect families with area resources.
General Responsibilities:
Provide personal visits based on PATNC curriculum and help parents to become their child’s first and best teacher. Tie them into resources needed for successful school entry.
Maintain adequate records according to
DESE/PATNC
guidelines.
Provide group meetings/group connections with appropriate developmental information and parent-child activities.
Provide developmental and hearing/vision screenings on children three months-kindergarten age with appropriate summaries for parents. Be trained in all the screening tools we use.
Maintain professional development training.
Recruit families for personal visits/group meetings/ developmental screening of children.
Maintain clear, well-organized, and comprehensive records of all personal visits and screenings.
Maintain clear, well-organized, and comprehensive records of all group meetings and play days with a written evaluation after each meeting.
Attend monthly staff meetings.
Communicate directly with PAT Director on sick time and personal schedules. Be on time and avoid cancelations on your part.
Communicate directly with PAT Director any concerns you have within families.
Be aware of your responsibility of mandated reporting and communication of that with the Director.
Educators are to be responsible, professional and practice appropriate safety measures with families.
