504 CASE MANAGER
Major Functions:
Plan, organize, coordinate and support the development of 504 plans for students with mental or physical impairments who require accommodations in the general education setting. The 504 case manager will work with general education teachers and administrators to ensure that students can access general education without discrimination at the same level as non-disabled peers.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provides training and guidance to schools of State and Federal laws pertaining to the purpose of Section 504 in preventing discrimination of individuals with disabilities and protecting these individuals.
- Provides training in collaboration with district special education and general education personnel on a broad range of student disabilities (physical, speech, hearing, vision, medical, learning, and/or emotional) and the impact of those to determine the need for intervention, special education, or 504 supports.
- Provides guidance of laws, policies, rules and regulations pertaining to the discipline of 504 eligible students.
- Assists in Child Find obligations with intervention, general education, and special education staff.
- Works with school intervention teams to provide intervention supports based on a student’s needs.
- Demonstrates knowledge of the requirements for special education eligibility, determining factors in success in the general education setting, and the protections and supports of Section 504.
- Demonstrate knowledge of scientifically based and developmentally appropriate instruction for children.
- Coordinate, and lead as needed, initial 504 meetings to determine eligibility and work as a team member to develop and implement accommodation plans.
- Coordinate with schools to hold yearly 504 renewal meetings and triennial eligibility meetings.
- Coordinate, and lead as needed, Manifestation Determination Review meetings for students with disciplinary infractions that may result in a change of placement.
- Communicate student needs with school-level 504 coordinators, administrators, general education teachers, MTSS teams, other school and District staff, parents, agencies, and community members.
- Communicate effectively verbally and in writing, utilizing tact and diplomacy and maintain effective working relationships.
- Maintain effective working relationships with a wide variety of District personnel and outside organizations
- Adhere to the Mississippi Code of Ethics
- Maintain confidentiality and privacy of all DeSoto County Schools’ records
Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Education
- Knowledge of Section 504 and the application in the school setting
- Certification set forth by Mississippi Department of Education
