B Hourly Non-Certified Schedule Summary:

The Bilingual EL Family Advocate (FA) works at the Smith Family Center in collaboration with International Center (IC) and Language Assistance staff to reach parents of ELs and families at home, in the community and at school. The Bilingual EL FA serves to enhance communication and understanding between language minority families and schools and expanding information regarding school and/or district expectations to language minority families; scheduling interpretation/translation assignments; supporting language minority student enrollment at IC; assisting with families’ requests or concerns; and making referral to other community agencies. The EL FA works with stakeholders to develop a supplemental school/district level parent and family engagement plans, provide accessibility and opportunities for families to engage in their child’s education and build capacity for parent and family leadership in the school and district.

Essential Duties:

(These duties represent a sample and may vary by position.) Manage and assign interpretation/translation requests.
Support language minority student enrollment at IC.
Assist with state-identified English Language Proficiency tests at IC.
Collect, maintain, and analyze any data as related to language minority student and family support.
Support language minority families at the Center for Family and Community Engagement.
Work with all school personnel to promote an understanding of the value of parent/school partnerships and assist them with building effective partnerships with EL families.
Provide materials, activities and training to EL parents and families to help them effectively support their children at home and at school.
Help parents and families to understand curriculum standards and assessments as related to EL education.
Coordinate school-based activities with other district programs and initiatives to serve EL parents and families.
Communicate with parents and families through a variety of means (community and school-based meetings, school website, flyers, etc.) to ensure EL parents and families are informed of opportunities to engage with their child’s school.
Conduct or assist with home visits to support EL student attendance and resolution of home/school conflicts
Performs related duties as assigned

Education and Experience:

Minimum Bilingual in Spanish
Two years of higher education or an Associate degree from an accredited institution of higher learning with an emphasis on Education, Sociology or Psychology and
Two years of successful experience in a related professional or educational setting OR Five years of successful experience in a related professional or educational setting Desired Additional specialized training or education in working with students and families
Experience training adults on effective engagement strategies Licensing /

Physical Requirements:

The work is primarily sedentary. It requires the ability to communicate effectively using speech, vision and hearing. The work requires the use of hands for simple grasping and fine manipulations and repetitive motor coordination. The work rarely requires one to exert physical effort or to work with biohazards or risks. The work requires activities frequently involving driving automotive equipment.
