Client Services/Advocacy Onslow Women’s Center operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to provide safe housing and services to its clients and the community.

About Onslow Women’s Center:

OWC provides crisis intervention to victims of domestic violence (DV), sexual assault (SA), human trafficking (HT) and a mission to end all forms of interpersonal violence through education and prevention. OWC provides advocacy, case management, community outreach and education, and emergency shelter. Our advocates provide a broad focus on all potential elements of victimization through crisis intervention, identify and respond to cognitive distortions, explore coping with symptoms, provide information, options, resources, explanation of systems and how to interface, and provide psychoeducation about sexual assault and Intimate Partner Violence. Advocates respond to the hospital for sexual assault cases, accompaniment to court, and support the shelter clients. The shelter is intended to be temporary based on emergent and imminent danger for all genders and their children. Additionally, OWC owns and operates a robust Thrift Store called Finders Keepers where all proceeds support the mission of serving survivors.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Provides information, referral, and support on a regular basis. Conducts client intakes, orientation, contracts, and exit interviews. Performs record-keeping functions pertaining to clients in our program including data collection, reporting, and case notes. Provides crisis intervention by telephone and face-to-face. Maintains knowledge of current issues in the field. Responds to the safety and welfare of the clients and the care of the facility by reporting needed repairs and health/safety hazards to the Shelter Manager. Assists in maintaining the shelter and helps ensure the readiness of rooms for occupancy. This includes minor maintenance, sanitizing, cleaning, and stocking of linens, supplies, etc. Maintains supply of forms and handouts, assembles client files and folders. Perform all other duties assigned by supervisor or manager.

OTHER JOB DUTIES

Assists in delivery of the OWC mission and programs as appropriate. May assist in gathering of statistical data on program activity. Perform related duties as assigned by the Shelter Manager and Assistant Manager. Resides on premises in the shelter while on duty. Implement all center rules, responsible for safe and efficient operation of the shelter; supervision of shelter residents. Meets and admits new, qualified residents, explains expectations and rules; obtains signature agreement. Assigns rooms, gives new residents orientation to the shelter, its policies and procedures. Ensures that residents’ rooms are clean and free of clutter upon discharge and during inspections. Assigns responsibilities and chores, posts schedules, and supervises the household duties. Provides crisis intervention on the crisis line. Inventories household supplies and equipment; inspects and evaluates physical condition of the establishment, and makes recommendations to the safe house Manager for repairs, relocation of equipment, and reallocation of space. Keeps record of anything significant that happens during a shift to report to Shelter Manager. Maintains Shelter log, daily status reports, creates & maintains spreadsheets & internal documents.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge concerning domestic violence. Ability to effectively counsel and provide information in crisis situations. Knowledge of local community and human services resources. Effective written and verbal communication skills. Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs, word-processing, email, spreadsheets, etc. Must relate well with others. Must possess qualities of sincerity and openness and be able to appropriately express positive and negative feelings. Must understand and support the philosophy and goals of the center. Must possess good physical and mental health. Must be capable of taking charge and be firm when appropriate. Must have valid North Carolina Driver’s License. Must have a good sense of personal boundaries, be able to maintain a professional report with clients Must be able to perform duties during crisis or if danger arises. Must be willing to learn and be open to instruction & constructive criticism. Must be willing to submit a background check.

EXPERIENCE & TRAINING

Required:

High school graduate

Preferred:

Two years post-secondary education in social work or related field from college or university preferred but not required.

Preferred:

Experience and/or training in domestic violence prevention. Equivalent combination of education and experience will be accepted. Must complete sexual assault/domestic violence/hospital advocacy training. Previous work or volunteer experience in the Human Services field preferred. Group home experience helpful.
