Job Summary:
The McKinney Vento Liaison will provide essential services to children and families facing housing instability, ensuring they receive appropriate educational services and support. This position will also connect at-risk students and families in need to resources and services to ensure student wellbeing and eliminate barriers to school engagement.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Maintain in-depth knowledge of the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act and federal guidelines related to the eligibility of children and provision of services under the McKinney-Vento program.
Identify students who may qualify as homeless under the McKinney-Vento Act. Assist families in enrolling students in school, ensuring a smooth registration process. Ensure that transportation services are provided to students experiencing housing instability. Work with school personnel to provide essential services and supplies that benefit children, youth, and families. Assist connecting students to resources to address medical needs such as vision care, immunizations, dental services, and mental health support to enhance school performance. Monitor attendance of homeless students to ensure consistent school participation and problem solve absenteeism. Connect parents and help facilitate student participation in tutoring, mentoring, and after-school programs.
Ensure that unaccompanied youth have access to programs and supports otherwise provided through a parent/legal guardian.
Develop and maintain strong relationships with community agencies to connect families with housing, healthcare, and other essential services. Provide referrals for food, clothing, and shelter for families experiencing homelessness, including those residing in motels or shared housing situations
Offer ongoing support to students and families, conducting regular follow-up.
Provide educational resources and information to shelters regarding school district services. Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation of all services provided to children and youth under the McKinney-Vento Program and prepare reports for stakeholders, as needed.
Help to facilitate professional development for school staff on the McKinney Vento Act and district protocols. Develop and participate in initiatives that promote student engagement and eliminate barriers to education. Assist with district-wide efforts to meet the needs of students and connect families to resources. Performs other tasks and assumes such other responsibilities as the direct supervisor may assign from time to time.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education & Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in Education, Counseling, Social Work, or a related field preferred. Prior experience in education, counseling, social work, or related fields, with a focus on working with at-risk students; or any equivalent combination of education and experience that would provide the noted knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Knowledge & Skills:
Knowledge of the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act and related federal, state, and local policies.
Strong communication, collaboration, and advocacy skills.
Ability to build relationships with families, school staff, and community organizations.
Crisis intervention and problem-solving skills.
Attention to detail and ability to maintain thorough records; handling sensitive information with discretion and confidentiality.
Exceptional organizational and time management skills to manage multiple cases and meet timelines.
Knowledge of community resources and referral processes, or willingness to learn.
Work Environment:
Occasional travel within the school district and community.
Interaction with students, families, school personnel, and community partners.
Occasional evening or weekend work may be required to meet the needs of families.
