Job Description Purpose of Position:

Accountable to the Director of Social Work/designee, Social Worker V is responsible for the clinical and administrative supervision of Social Work Staff and graduate-level social work students in the area (s) assigned. The employee functions as a member of the Emergency Department leadership team.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Provides clinical supervision and oversees the work done by all social workers in the Emergency Room, as well as, social work students, if assigned to him/her.

  • Meets with supervisors individually and/ or as a group for formal supervision.
  • Review documentation of Social Work staff for content, appropriateness of care, timeliness, and compliance with Medical Records and Departmental documentation requirements
  • Assesses the educational needs of staff and makes recommendations for in-service training.
  • Prepares yearly Health and Hospitals Corporation staff evaluations and/or social work student evaluations, if applicable
  • Conducts employee counseling and/or disciplinary actions as necessary.
  • Oversees staff use of time; approves/denies requests for leave in collaboration with The Human Resources Department.
  • Prepares social work staff’s schedule to ensure appropriate social work coverage in all three tours.
  • Collaborates with emergency room Chief of Service, Associate Director of Nursing, and Administrator to ensure identification of high and moderate social risk patients and ensure appropriate care.
  • Trains and orients new staff.
  • Participates in the department’s cross-training program.
  • May serve on inter-agency committees and task forces as a representative of the Department of Social Work.
  • Carries a caseload of patients by covering a unit and/or in the absence of his/her supervisees.
  • Participates in the Hospital/Departmental Emergency Response to internal or external disasters
  • Coordinates case findings and collaborates with the interdisciplinary teams in the emergency rooms
  • Acts as a Liaison for the department and Hospital to the New York City Police Department, court system, and other agencies involved like ACS, APS and the like
  • Rotates his/her schedule to monitor staff in all tours.
  • Demonstrates Knowledge of and ability to utilize the PSYCKES database.
  • Preventing and Managing Crisis Situations (PCMS)
  • Performs other duties assigned by the supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications For Assignment to Level V
