Social Work Full Job Description Function:

The Title I Social Worker will provide support counseling to students & families experiencing crisis impacting educational progress; provide faculty training on addressing issues

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Analyze data to identify students presenting with risk behaviors or conditions which may cause interruption or incompletion of a full school experience Counsel targeted individual students.

Counsel parents toward improving the home situation whereby more favorable conditions will be attained in regard to schoolwork, behavior, attendance and interest.

Work with teachers and parents to meet the needs of targeted students through the development of academic, personal, social activities.

Organize structured counseling activities for at-risk youth i.e. issues around social responsibility.

Consult and cooperates with guidance counselors, school psychologists, principals, nurses, and classroom teachers in assessing the mental and emotional health of the individual student having school difficulty and in evolving appropriate plans.

Take initiative in planning, developing, implementing and evaluating programs and services to meet the needs of targeted students who have special problems adjusting to school Directly assist students with adjustment problems and, when necessary, refers students to appropriate specialized personnel such as school psychologists and/or other counseling services.

Participates with other school personnel in case conferences.

Refer students with critical needs, in consultation with their parents, to appropriate community resources and follow up with students, as warranted.

Work closely with and serves as liaison between the school and outside agencies, such as the Department of Public Welfare and the Department of Social Services, the Police, and the Court.

Operate as an advocate with students utilizing skills that respect issues of cultural and ethnic diversity and equity for every student and family.

Maintain and continually update a directory of referral services to be utilized in crisis situations affecting students such as suicide threats, alcohol or drug induced traumas, and the like.

Assess the Behavior Intervention Specialists role in supporting the school improvement plan and the implementation of the Title I Program Maintain confidentiality.

Maintain records consistent with ethical and legal guidelines. Operate within the federal and state laws and the established district and school procedures and policies. Provide support for other school and district programs and personnel.

Attend district professional development and meetings. Keep informed of current professional trends. Utilizes computers effectively in the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities.

Complete other duties as assigned by the Principal in accordance with Title I guidance

Required Qualifications:

The applicant must qualify for a School Social Workers certificate issued by the R.I. Department of Education.

A Masters Degree in social work from an institution approved by the State Board of Regents will be required in addition to a background of experience which is broad and varied.

At least three (3) years of experience as a school social worker preferredSuccessful experience in dealing with inner-city families preferred
