Summary We are seeking a Mental Health & Wellness Counselor to join our team at the Down Syndrome Foundation of Florida. In this role, you will provide essential support to individuals with Down syndrome and their families, helping them navigate their emotional and behavioral challenges while promoting their overall well-being and inclusion in the community.
Responsibilities Group Programs & Family Support:
Plan and facilitate group therapy sessions for individuals with Down syndrome, focusing on topics such as emotional regulation, social skills, self-advocacy, and coping strategies. Lead support groups and educational workshops for parents, caregivers, and family members to enhance their understanding of mental health challenges and coping mechanisms. Collaborate with families and caregivers to provide guidance and resources for supporting their loved ones. Facilitate classes such as PEERS and Creative Confidence , designed to enhance social-emotional development, mental wellness, independence and job readiness skills for young adults with Down syndrome.
Individual Counseling:
Provide one-on-one counseling to young adults with Down syndrome, addressing emotional, behavioral, and social challenges.
Collaboration & Advocacy:
Work closely with the other staff and board members to integrate mental health services into existing programs. Advocate for mental health awareness and inclusion within the Down syndrome community. Coordinate with other professionals, including medical providers, therapists, and educators, to ensure comprehensive care.
Administrative & Reporting:
Maintain confidential and accurate client records in compliance with legal and ethical standards. Evaluate program effectiveness and provide feedback for continuous improvement. Stay updated on best practices in mental health counseling for individuals with developmental disabilities. Assist individuals with Down syndrome in managing their emotional and behavioral needs through group/class sessions and individual counseling. Develop individualized therapeutic plans tailored to the unique needs of each client. Utilize evidence-based counseling approaches adapted for individuals with developmental disabilities. Implement behavior management strategies to support positive outcomes. Collaborate with families to provide child family counseling and support services. Maintain accurate medical records and documentation of client progress. Participate in team meetings to discuss client care plans and progress. Provide grief counseling as needed for families navigating challenges. Support educational initiatives that promote understanding of Down syndrome. Requirements Experience in child family counseling of individuals with DS/IDD or special education is preferred. Strong knowledge of behavior management techniques. Excellent communication skills for effective interaction with clients and families. Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment. Compassionate approach towards individuals with disabilities and their families. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build trusting relationships. Knowledge of evidence-based therapeutic techniques adapted for individuals with disabilities. Experience leading structured group programs, preferably PEERS or other social-emotional development curricula . Ability to facilitate engaging and effective group sessions. Cultural competence and sensitivity when working with diverse populations. Familiarity with ICD-10 coding is a plus but not required. Why Join Us?
